I have a 06 5. 9 4x4 MCab Auto Tranmssion and when I was creepin around under my truck i noticed the rubber flange or seal at the back of the transmission (where driveshaft goes in) is showing signs of cracking. My first question is why would this already be showing cracks and my second question is, what's the best way to fix it and is it expensive? I thought about applying a light coat of some kind of rubber adhesive/silcone.

I hope i explained the part correctly as i dont know the name for it. its not a bearing seal but more like a cover flange shaped like a cone

thanks,

Chad

that sounds like the output shaft on the back of the trans. that seal should be replaced. its not to hard to do, but you need to take the rear driveshaft out. when you do that ATF will poor out. if its not leaking bad or at all. id leave it till you need to do a trans service. or like i have done (not on my ram, but my old dart) was to jack up the rear of the truck high enought to keep the ATF from just pouring out when i took the drive line out. then i just popped the old on out, and tapped in the new one...

Actually the rubber boot you are seeing is a dust boot to keep most of the dirt and debris out of the seal. The actual seal lip is positioned even with the end of the extension housing or about 2" forward of the rear end of the boot.
