Well folks, I just replaced the third transmission from Standard Transmission. No trouble with the fifth gear fix but the other parts are cooking. My question is, with the transmission they send a gal. of syn-torque . That does not fill up the transmission. Is the transmission supposed to fill to the fill hole or just take a gal. I fried my US Gear also and was told I had to much oil in there. 32 ounces and not to the fill hole. It will hold 44 ounces but not do it.

How much gear lube is to go in there?

Thanks.

TT,

Man, that bites. 3 trannies. I am on my 3rd too. One gallon is the correct amount. My understaning is the 1 gallon container is just about right. If you are hauling stuff around I would personally change the oil more often.

How much weight are ya pullin around? Hot-Shot? Hay?

There is anecdotal evidence that the Fastcoolers from Verlyn are helping to lower temps. You might give 'em a shot.

Was your oil level normal or low when the problems occured?

Where you using Syn-Torq or what kind of lube?

Don~

edit- the gallon I poored in was just a tad too much. You may have a bit left over.

Don:

I don't haul hot shot but tow two trailers. A 14,000 lb. work trailer and a 12,400 lb RV. The transmission took the gal. and a little more. Is that little more to much?:( If so I'll drain some. I welding a temp gauge into the pto cover to mount inside. When I do that the oil will be drained and I'll add new.

I'm also looking into the cooler parts for the sides.

As for the oil, I have been using the syn-torq. For the first 196,000 I used the series 2000 from Amsoil. It seem to do better. No war. I know what you thing of Amsoil.

Run in 4th Over!

If you have an overdrive... run in 4th over. I have watched transmision temps for a long time. The few times I had to pull a load back in 4th (lost 5th gear), the trans cooled dramatically. NVG4500s run MUCH cooler in 4th. Like as much as 40 degrees or more.

I have no temp data with Castrol mine was all with Amsoil S2K 75W90. I ever got it to 200 and that was pulling 5th WOT in 90+ degree heat. I can see a 2WD or a setup that reduces the air flow over the transmission running warmer.

I personally overfill by keeping the rear much lower on the hoist and even then fill until it runs out.

My replacement brand new NVG4500 that went in at 150K had 30 weight oil in it when I sampled with 26K on the oil. If shifted poorly and ran 10 - 20 degrees warmer. Oil was still fine at 26K on it but lab flagged it because of lower viscosity. It got changed!

Thanks JJW:

When I put the temp probe on I'm going back to S2K . I just like the feel with it better. I seem to get a rattle with the syn-torq.

Towing in forth over sucks. I don't like high RPM. The truck pulls better below 2000. 14 MPG in fifth at 65 mph.

Thanks again.
