transmisson rattle

I have a 04. 5 3500 with a NV5600 and 275K miles on it, when the truck is stopped and running at idal in netrual you can hear a rattle sound comeing from the transmission, nothing seems wrong when you drive it and every thing around it (exhaust, cross member, so on) are all tight. Any ideas?

Does the noise go away if you push the clutch pedal down to the floor? Truck running, stationary.



Any other ways to control turn on or off the noise?



Repair history on trans or clutch replacements?

I think Gary has hit the nail on the head... . this could be nothing more than a clutch issue... his suggestion to make another test or two will add to what we can suggest to make the repair... I've owned some high mileage trucks and have not had an issue with the NV5600 unless it ran low on oil...

The South Bend clutch in my 03 rattled a lot when idling in neutral. I was told it would rattle before I bought it. It is just a rattle, the clutch was working perfectly when I traded the truck.

I think any clutch related question or comment deserves a reference to the type of clutch installed, stock or other version. I think drivers expect a stock type to be quiet and many of the performance types have a bit of rattle, it's the nature of the beast.

The clutch is probably fine, like Gary said, it is the nature of the beast. However to be more specific, it is not the clutch that rattles, it is the transmission. The heavy duty clutch does not dampen the Cummins engine idle pulse like the oem does. So that pulse is transmitted to the transmission gears and causes the rattle/growl. I would guess that when the transmission is cold, as in the first start of the day it is quiet, then as the oil warms up and has less resistance, the growl is present.

You are saying a South Bend Clutch. Did you also replace the stock dual mass flywheel with a S. B. solid steel flywheel? I did that with my 06 2500 and it raised the drive train noise to a whole new level.
I personally was willing to live with the noise because it was such a great setup. At slower speeds, like driving around town, if I would keep my eng. RPMs up a little higher than before, the sound would diminish substantially. At idle? I'd just turn the radio up.

His is an 04. 5, NV5600, never built with a DMF. DMF arrived later in '05 with G56 only.

His situation mimicked mine so much, I just assumed he had a DMS. My bad.

The clutch is a performace modle it is a single disc unit rated for 450hp, and yes the fly wheel was replaced with the south bend one that came with the clutch. And I didnt notice the sound until about three weeks ago.
