I am looking at buying a retired government truck that has a 318 in it. Would this truck have the same three speed automatic that the CTD has? I am not planning on putting a manual in it since this truck will be equiped with an 8' western plow in the future.

Thanks,

Ben

318

The transmission is most likely a 727 torqueflite, a very reliable unit. Could also be a 904. The model of the transmission is stamped into the housing near. I believe the 904 has a square pan and the 727 has one corner that is not square. The 904 is the light duty version with smaller shaft and fewer clutches. bg

The small block 727's and 904's share identical bolt patterns, but they will ONLY bolt up Mopar small blocks, (including the 5. 2 and 5. 9 Magnum engines up through at least '99 if you do some work to the pilot hole in the crank).

But, the diesel automatic has a completely different bolt pattern than any of the V-8's. I think the only block that has the same bell pattern as the diesel is the V-10, but I am not 100% positive.

Besides, a diesel would probably trash an old 904 in about 10 days. A 727 would last longer if it would fit.

Ok, now that I found all of this good information out, what AT is behind the CTD? Will this different transmission bolt up to the transfer case with out problems?

Any input is helpful here.

Thanks,

Ben

If you are talking about a first gen truck. It would have eather a 727 or a 518. It would depend on the year model of the truck. The 518 has an OD unit. The 727 does not.

As far as a transfer case. You would need the tail housing/output shaft setup for the case. The CTD used a 205 transfer case. The 203 full time case"Will NOT" stand up to the CTD.

Most goverment trucks were full time 4WD with the chain drive 203 cases.

The next problem is the front axle. If this truck is a 3/4 ton gaser it will have the Dana 44 front axle in it. A CTD will eat it on one good stomp of the pedal I bet. You need at lest a Dana 60 to hold a CTD. Even it is a little weak at times. I can show you the scars on the inside of my Dana 60 cover from where a previous owner exploded the spider gears.

I forgot to mention. If it is a crew cab Dodge it might have a Dana 60 in the front. I have seen them both ways on this model of truck. But the standard cab will be a Dana 44. I have not seen one with the Dana 60 on a gasser.
