Thanks, TDR Staff

How long is the 518/618Auto? 727?

Interesting Diesel Dodge Project

I was wandering if anyone has tried a trany conversion from a automatic to a 5 or 6 speed, if so is it worth trying or not. The reason is I was looking for a 96 or 97 3/4 ton and I have located several but the ones that I like are all automatics and I hate automatic tranys.

I tracked that guy down and looked up his phone number, sent him about 4 messages and called his father...

No good. . never replied.

People should not place ads unless they intend on responding to them.

I just got done doing the whole thing. The biggest thing was the input from the transfer case. You have to change that to match with the shaft on the back of your transmission.

There are two different styles that your Auto used and you need to be sure which one you have. Even the serial number from the transfer does not assure you getting the right one. (TRUST ME)

Even though the pics are posted as "slushbox and 5speed"... it does not matter stick to auto, they used both. The onley way to tell is to pull down the trnasfer case.

Plan on cutting a hole in the floor.

If you do it right, you wont spend 7,000. But it IS expensive.

I had my trans done after buying it from the donor truck kind of as a preventative measure. Things like the average person having the flywheel resurfaced and the driveshafts made can run you 450. 00 alone. Good clutch, fresh rear main, blah-de-blah-de-blah... It all runs up the bill. In my case, I WANTED the 5 speed and did not want to get rid of my truck (shooting for 750,000 miles) so it did not matter how much was spent.

If you want some other info, PM me and I will try to help out or answer your questions.

You WILL bathe in ATF when you do it. It makes your hair SO nice and shiny!!

Taking the nice cooler off the side of the block for the automatic is not exactly pleasent either.

I forgot if it was here or the DOdge forum I saw someone write that it only takes four hours or so... BULL! Plan on having your truck held up for at least 5 days if everything works out. We had a pit, a full machine shop and air tools and it still took us that long. Then you find that you have the wrong input for the transfer and you get held up another 3 days.

BTW: Dont think a transfer from the donor truck fixes your issue. Only if you get the driveshafts too will it work. At least in my case.

The input for the transfer runs around 260. 00.

Thanks for the info it will help I might have a line on a wrecked 4x4 with a 5 speed, so maybe it won't turn into a big deal. But once again thanks.
