Travel to Yellowstone

Fireman Dave how big of a rig can you fit in the Canyon campground.

Well, we have a 27' TT, and not all of the sites in Canyon would have been able to handle us. We did get one there, but we had to park the Ram sideways in front of it. No problem, really. They looked up which sites would handle us before giving us one. We got there on June 14th, so we were able to walk in and get one. This time of year will be harder, but several of the campgrounds are non-reservable. Canyon is actually one of the reservable ones. We drove around Norris when we first got there, but it was hard to even manuever the roads with our rig (we're about 50' bumper to bumper) - almost got hung up on one curve in there. The campsites there were too small for us. Bay Bridge had some bigger sites, I believe, but not a lot of trees in there. The nice thing about Canyon is it's in the middle of the park, so it's a good satellite location for taking day trips to other areas of the park. I called there before I went and talked to a ranger who gave me good info on what campgrounds could handle us. I also had a brochure with good info in it. I can give you more details if you want on the campgrounds in the park. I'll be on line late tonight (after work) and tomorrow. Then I'll be camping Sun -Tue.

Thanks for the info Dave, my rig is 35' long and I was told that fishing bridge was the only campground that would handle a rig of that size. I guess them's the breaks for having an oversized rig kinda like having an overvalved truck. lol

Just got back from Yellowstone. We had a great time. The two roads that go from the central part up to the nort part are bumpy as #@$%. Dont let the traffic pressure you to go fast, its not worth beating up your rig. We stayed at Madison, Grant and Canyon campgrounds. All nice. We liked Madison the best. I know that madison would hold a 35ft Rv because one was parked next to us. Seen quite a bit of animals. No bears. A fire started at the east entrance so we had to detour north and leave the northeast entrance to cody wyoming. Spent couple days there and like it. All in all, glad to be back to Oregon. The scenery in oregon is as beautifull as yellowstone just no geysers. I would suggest this trip to anyone at least once.

Sounds like you came into Cody through Sun Light Basin. What were you towing and how did you pull that hill out of Sun Light?

Scenery from the Sun Light Basin lookout is not too shabby, is it?

OK guys now it's my turn I am off to Yellowstone in about an hour. It looks like I have to stop in Sac to help a Ford guy, seems to be having chip problems. Then off to Winamucka to help another friend that is on his way to Sturguest (not sure of the spelling) for the big Harley meet he has a broken trailer axle and I happen to have a spare. Then I get to take a vacation although Piers did send me a new turbo so that will have to go on somewhere in my spare time.

Not sure of the Sunlight basin but it was through Cookcity in the NE exit yellowstone and then through the BearTooths. I had a 8ft camper on with a total gvw of 10900. The corners were 20mph and I had no problem speeding back up. Worst Gas mileage on trip was 15mpg from Spokane WA to Hermiston OR.

40 or 50mph headwind all the way. best gas mileage was Bend OR to Ontario OR with 2 passes on the way and 17. 4 mpg.
