Everytime I take the family out on a camping trip I take a couple of firearms. If it's desert dirtbike type camping I bring an Ithaca M37 shotgun (20" barrel) and a Beretta 92F. (2-3 day trips)

When camping in the High Sierra's I bring the above 2 and usually a Ruger mini 14. (several week long trips)

Does anyone else carry multiple weapons when camping?

I don't, but I live & ride in the Sierra's so maybe I should trade in my chest protector for a bullet proof vest![/QUOTE

Why do you say that? Has someone shot at you? I always pack iron when in the woods. We dont live in a perfect world. Ask the relatives of those hikers in Georgia. GregH

The crime is awfully low where we are compared to where the wepons are being packed from. The post just struk me odd, I guess for the warm fuzzy security feeling its all good but there have been times while riding in OHV areas I hear shots fired and it makes for an uneasy feeling not knowing who or where its comming from.

Easy now, I am not ani-gun. I grew up hunting and there is a time and place for that IMO. I had a cousin who was shot in the head from unsafe gun practices, he was too young to die. Im just not into the Badazz, I got guns & shoot em when I want thing especially around kids.

blackfields57 - Im west side over in Arnold and will be camping over on your side next month at June lake!

I Have a Shotgun and a Hiking side arm which travels with me,
But I do it in a a discrete manor... I don't 'advertise'.

I have to opoligise, I was just scanning "new posts" the other night and saw " Traveling / Camping " I didn't even realise TDR has a forum specific for this kind of thing... my bad.

No doubt about it Matt, crime in the Sierra's is lower than in my part of the world. The problem is you really never know when trouble may show up at your door step, be it the city or the beautiful High Sierra's. I routinely camp in Bridgeport and have had numerous bears in my camp over the years. One year while camping there a group of outlaw bikers invaded the campground. The campground that I stay at is family oriented. Needless to say when the biker's (1%ers) showed up, they proved that they ruled the campground through intimidation.

I've heard gun shots while riding and I don't like it either. Kinda brings on the pucker factor. Bottom line it is legal to recreationally shoot in the forest up there. Can't shoot in a Nat'l park. But it is legal in most of the Nat'l forest. Better wear your vest :-laf.

Matt, we apparently submitted at the same time. Yeah it's a new foreum and thanks for joining in. You can be bad.

:-laf, well thats it. . Im taking my Husky down to the gun club and do some roosten!

Naw. . I would really need my vest then:-laf

For the guy's in Calif what does it take to get a CCW? permit I carry my 45 with me when I am on the road I know shouldn't but when I am out in the middle of knowwhere that is my olny defence but I want to do it without going to Jail I wouldn't look right behind Bar's or wearing stripes lol

I realise you guys are out west, but I would advise against bringing guns (perticularly handguns) into NJ unless COMPLETELY necessary.

It just aint worth the grief.

The laws are written in such a way that a lot of police dont even know what exactly is "legal.

Loaded mags are trouble, as are anything that even remotely looks like an "assault weapon", anything that has a mag that holds over 15 rounds, and the list goes on.

Dont ruin your vacation here. Go to Pa where theyre OK with guns.

Matt, I am sorry you feel uncomfortable under those situations. I dont care if people are shooting around my activity area as long as I am not in any danger. I have been shot at while serving in the Military and certainly know the difference. I have never been shot at during any outdoor recreational activity. However, I have been accosted by individuals that thought they were going to take something from me. It did not happen because They saw my holstered weapon and stopped in mid stride so suddenly that one almost fell over. These "gents" were smoking "funny weed", you could smell it in the air by their truck. Their intent was clear, two against one. That situation was ended before it got out of hand. I hope you have safe and enjoyable outings. GregH

If you heard the shots and didn't feel a burning tingle, you were OK. By the time the sound gets to you, the bullet is already spent and in the ground, or tree, or bush, or rock.

I own guns, I use them, I take them camping with me sometimes, depends on where I am going. Once they saved my wife and I from potentially serious grief out camping from 3 very drunk individuals who felt we didnt need all that we had, at least until I pulled out a gun. Many times you hear shooting sometimes even relatively close by when out. However once I found myself out in the mountains in the line of fire from some nitwits shooting who didnt know or care what was downrange. They were very apologetic and all that once they were aware of the situation. Yes in general in the National Forest/BLM land you can shoot unless posted otherwise however that does not relieve you of your responsibility to shoot safely and know what the heck is downrange. Again I have no problems with guns but I do have problems with drunks or idiots using guns. This is not against anyone posting on this thread (well unless your a drunk idiot with a gun shooting in public with no thought or concern for safety of course ). Shoot to your hearts content just do it safely and with regard to others who may be near.

Most times I keep my . 380 hidden away on the boat. . esp if I am on vacation (and sometimes I travel thru NJ).

However, I have never had a time when I had to even think about getting it out.

Mr Smith and MR DAN wesson 357-44-travels with me all the time. Have a life time C-C permit---BEN

Campgrounds are not always the safe, family place we'd like them to be. There are numerous stories of bad people with bad intentions in campgrouns. Same with camping "in the wild". I have no problem with responsible people carrying guns while camping. I am also not willing to give up my (and others) rights to have firearms because of the nitwit few, so I'll live with that potential danger.

Do I carry camping? Maybe:-laf

If you do this regularly, I'd suggest to get a NJ firearms ID card.

It's gotten through the NJSP. It's NOT a carry permit(NJ dont trust taxpayers carrying guns) it's just to show you've gone through the NIC's system.

If God forbid you got stopped, it would make your life a LOT easier.

JM. 02 YMMV etc. etc.
