My objectives were to get a smoother ride overall, especially on the expansion joint infested freeways around here. I also wanted to be able to do some mild offroading while not affecting my towing.

I'll say upfront that I'm happy with my decision. You'll need to really determine what you want out of it before you make your decision.

Called Kent at Trex and he recommended the Bilstein setup, which is the mildest of their 3 offerings. The other 2 setups, Fox and King are hard core offroad racing suspensions. I wanted to keep the stock height and profile of the truck. Kent recommended the Bilstein shocks, shock mounts, and limiting straps.

Putting the Trex shock mounts and shocks next to the stock stuff was scary. This stuff is definitely designed to laugh at the worst abuse you can throw at it. You have to see it to believe it.

I had the installation done at Carli Suspension in Orange, CA recommended by TRex. Nice clean shop, knowledgeable guy.

OK. First impressions:

1. Overall does is drive like a Cadillac now? No. No miracles, it's still a 1 ton truck for petes sake. :D

2. City driving - drives like a 1/2 ton. smooth, SUV like. Noticeable.

3. Freeway without the Expansion joints - What was smooth before is really smooth now.

4. Freeway with Expansion joints.

Have they disappeared? No. Does it help? Yes, here's what I found.

Before when I drove over the worst parts I couldn't adjust the vertical bass/treble sliders on the radio because the truck was shaking so bad. I also could not drink from a cup or bottle. No way. Going over the same sections now the truck is bouncing but it's dampened enough that I can adjust the sliders and drink.

It's kind of a strange sensation. The bouncing now is "softer" and doesn't feel as deep. What was way uncomfortable before is now definitely liveable (wifey too). But don't get me wrong. The truck still shakes.

That's on the worst sections. The medium to mild expansion joint areas are fine. In some mild areas I can hear the tires hitting the joints but don't feel anything, like in our SUV. Used to feel em.

5. Offroad - So I get home and go to an area where they are about to build a couple hundred homes. Still lots of dirt bike trails, washboards, rutted roads, partial grading, etc. WOW! That was fun. It soaked up everything I put in front of it. No way I could do what I did with the stock suspension and not put my head through the cab roof .

So my personal conclusion:

I like it. I have a tank like suspension underneath me that I will never worry about breaking or tweaking. My family can now live with the ride. My buddies won't be able to keep up with me offroad for sure.

It's a lot of money though and has offroad racing origins. So if I were ONLY looking for an expansion joint solution and NEVER went offroad I would still consider other alternatives. I don't know if any of them work though.

As the self proclaimed starter of the T-rex threads:rolleyes: ,i was a little concerned that i had selected the Bilstein system. Was i choosing T-rex light? hmn... ... ... . after all i got authorization from the CFO because it would make it ride better on the expansion joints right... ... ... .

Let me tell you boys, this is T-REX period!!

I have had mine on for a month now and have finally gotten a chance to put it thru the test. can i go thru the woops at 65? No

but i did go tru them at 35. and it worked great. can i jump it 3 feet in the air? No. I have got it a foot in the air though( Don't tell kent!) he doesn't recommend jumping with the Bilstein set-up. It landed so nice and smooth. I have yet to bottom this truck out that i can tell.

I love my T-rex Bilstein syspension.

Nick,

look in my readers rigs for pics of the system.

best regards

The color you have just didn't work for me and my trucks color theme. I was able to get a hold of kent and snag a pair before the went out to the powdercoater.

your freeway explanation was spot on. The expansion joints are still there but much more forgiving.

Yes the CFO is happy but i still think she wants it to ride lika a lexus

Bottom line is that I am happy and it is my truck!

Kevin,

Thanks for the thread. Both you and Diesel Dan posted great info on the Bilstein system applied to the expansion joint joint problem. I can't wait to get the new truck. I know what I'm BOMBing first!

Jim, nice meeting you yesterday! You're the first TDR member I've met in person. TDR is everywhere and it's frickin cool. Great stories too. :-laf

Kevin,

The pleasure is all mine. It is funny how small of a world it is and how many TDR guys are out there! Also, the nicest people by far, even in So Cal. ;)

If you dont mind me asking. What did the install cost?? I am looking into the King version for my chase trips for the Herbst's in Baja..... Dont want to do the work myself though.

$295 for my install. I kept my stock springs front and rear. No minipak. So the install included the shocks and reservoirs, shock mounts, and limiting straps (some welding/painting required the strap mounts). I don't know if the full setup would be more or not.

If you're in SoCal I would recommend Carli. He's really knowledgeable about the Trex. and when he said, "oh yeah, kent and i were working on his truck last night", i figured he's got an inside scoop.

T.Rex

I have had the T. Rex/Bilstein suspension with mini packs for about a month now. Ksadz and Dan’s comments about the ride are accurate. I have not taken it offroad yet, but I have driven down some pretty nasty roads at speeds not possible in my old truck (1996 Ram 1500).

My goal was to lift the front a little for the 315’s and have a better ride. Seems a cheap lift kit would not suffice. So I went with T. Rex, and did the install myself using the just the T. Rex directions. I was a little worried about the install. But all in all it went pretty smooth. My friends thought I was crazy to rip all the suspension off my new truck. They don’t think that way anymore! I measured a 2. 5” lift in the front and almost no change in the back. Exactly what I was looking for. Pictures can be found in my Readers Rigs.

Just installed my T-Rex suspension over the weekend. I also went with the Bilsteins, new front coils and the mini pack rear springs. It takes a full day to do it right and that is with 4 of us working on it. We did the work at my friend's brake and alignment shop with all the proper tools. I am an experimental machinist so I built a drill jig to drill the spring buckets. I don't much care to drill holes that size using tranfer punches and pilot holes. That helped a lot. I also machined new brackets for the resevoirs(don't tell Kent)front and rear. Our main concern was whether we would be able to set the caster correctly. It was just like Kent said,it was a non-issue with plenty of adjustment either way. We set it with a bit more positive than when we took the initial stock readings.

We also found out ,it is mush less hassle to pull out the whole set of leaf springs and do the change over off the vehicle. To it on the frame you would have to disconnect a lot of cables and lines since there is not enough slack to pull the alignment pins.

Lots of torquing!

Initialy,we were only able to get 145lbs. of air into the resevoirs until I was able to get over to a friend with a bottle of nitrogen. With nitrogen(200lbs. ) the ride is much more firm and will have to play with the tire pressures. I also changed over to 315's the same day so I can't really say what is tire or suspension feel. I know I hit a dip where people almost come to a stop at 45 miles an hour and it took it without a hiccup.

Sorry for ranting so long but I can't get over how much I like this set up.

Bring that truck out to the desert and well install it for you. PM me for a price

I just received my T-Rex Fox set-up. I carry heavy and am starting with the progressive coils for softer front hits and leaving the rear alone for now. May do mini-pak and find a way for the overloads to cycle past the stops until I put the camper on then either add the stops or put something on the ends of the overloads to hit a stop that is higher up on the frame. This is fun! George

Finally got some pics of my truck up. As you can see it's a pretty sano install. Sage hid the reservoirs behind the plastic wheel well liner. The only sign it's not stock are the shock mounts and the bit of reservoir hose showing, just the way I like it.

I'll take some more tonight.

George, I saw a set of those Fox shocks at the shop. I was looking for the Peterbilt that they were for. :D Beautiful pieces of work. Did Kent recommend those for you?

george,

maybe you might be able to render an opinion as to how the t-rex would match up with the kelderman 4 link, after your install.

t-rex

i just installed my system this weekend and have about 500 highway and city miles only. i also went with the blasting system, looking for a better ride on highway and city roads. the roads in pgh pa are pretty bad here. i also installed mini leafs in rear.

i think i was expecting too much. know that i drove it for 500 miles i don think i can even tell a difference. i installed all shocks without letting gas out in fear of not finding a place to fill them. i drove around a while and was not at all impressed. i have hummer wheels and tires at 45 psi. i lowered the psi to 32 on all four, found a place to check shocks and set them at 200 psi each. i made some difference, fells kinda bounce-se.

i can say that all of my miles have been towing, maybe it will be different without the trailer, but that why i bought the system. i was sick of bouncing all over the seat every day.

i can say the customer support is unbelievable. spoke with sarah about five times one day this week, she was trying to help my any way she could. maybe when kent comes back next week he will have some ideas for me and we can get something worked out if i have a problem.

maybe it is hard for people to say that they are not impressed because they just spent $2500 for a better ride. i am not that way, I will tell the truth , no pride hurt.

i do not want to bash the system , it is so impressive to look at and i very happy with my install. took about 5. 5-6 hours by myself for the front and rear. alot of the time was getting the truck safely on stands in a gravel driveway.

if anybody can help let me know, i am open to all comments and am willing to try anything to make it good. i just want it to ride better than a set of dd25 springs and a set of ranchos for 250 bucks.

ps- maybe i just drive too slow. i does feel like the faster you go the better it is gonna be.

ksadz... Kent recommended them ala Earth Roamer and George Baines's expedition truck. Both use King or Fox. I was asking for a lot for this truck... everyday... 5th wheel... . camper... . backcountry light and heavy... heavy wheels and commercial tires... . nice ride for momma as well. We will see... Kent gracious about experimenting and swapping what is needed.

jadoca... the rear Kelderman was real nice... so nice it made the front seem like a brick. Because washboards were taking the 2002 truck/camper apart I am starting with T-Rex on the new truck which is quite an improvement over the 2002 in factory ride. Even if the T-Rex cannot match the air ride, I expect the overall improvement to be sufficient. George
