Tried to remove silencer ring today

Hey folks,

Just a couple questions.

If i take the ring out of the turbo, and for whatever reason it needs to go back in, is it bent from all the prying? What are the chances that ill put knicks or dents in the housing,(with the screwdriver edge) and if that happens does it matter? Will that affect the seal? Thaks in advance.
 
If you take it out you can put it back in very easy. I don't think if you put any nicks in the housing it will effect anything. Once when I took it out of one of the trucks I had I put a few nicks in. I just put mine back in Friday because I put the TAG in and they say it works better with it in. I like the sound with it out but if the TAG does what they say I can live with the quite. So far I can tell a difference.
 
Removing the silencer ring

I too had problems removing the silencer ring. I'm sure I'm not the first to come up with this solution but thought I'd share what worked for me. I ended up making a simple tool that got the clip right out on the first try. Made from an old donor screwdriver that I ground on the side of the blade with my bench grinder. Hard to see in this picture, but the hook end (what was the side of the screwdriver blade) is ground to a chisel point. This sharp point helps grip the end of the retaining ring when prying it out of the groove in the turbo housing. This tool made it a lot easier to get the flat end of the ring pried up and out.

LMAO - I was talking to Forrest today and misunderstood what he was talking about. I took the white piece of plastic that is in the lower tube out and I really thought I accomplished something :D

Oh well, I have a dental pick at home so I'll take it out then.

I don't know you, but have read alot about you. If your mechanical skills are what they are, take your grandfathers advise and learn the trade startin with a broom. That's no joke either, I started on a cut-off saw after 2 years of vocational HS machine trades training. Not to redirect a thread, but get the basic 2 year business degree and then learn how to remove a snap ring ... ... ... ... after that, you can learn how to make one ... ... ... ... . after that, you can learn how to sell one.



Seems you have plenty of time since your grandfather is still around, and your father and uncles are still involved.



Sorry if this offended anyone, including you Nick. I own a small machine shop that I built with no business degree ... ... ... . ask your grandfather about how that happens and listen to what he tells you!

I removed my silencer ring today - it took all of 5 minutes. I took some pictures during and after the job to hopefully help you and others out.



The first 2 pictures show the snap ring partially out of its groove (about 2 inches). I used a small ground down screwdriver behind the end of the lower snap ring end and just popped the end out of the groove. Then I just worked my way down the groove (counterclockwise). After about 2 inches, I was able to pop the snap ring out with my index finger.



The 3rd picture shows the snap ring removed, but the silencer ring in place. The 4th picture shows the silencer ring removed. The 5th picture shows the ground down screwdriver.

Thank you Jstieger. Once i get my scotty 3 intake i will for sure get it out. Seems like yours was really easy. Looks like i got a truck with a PITA ring. Ill get it next time. Thanks for the nice pics.

I got mine out in a couple of minutes but I have some experience with these types of rings. I just used a small flat bladed screwdriver and got under the upper part in this pic and pried it out of the groove. Once it's out some and the blade is under that ramp, you can force the screwdriver to slide under the ring to keep it from dropping back in the groove. The ring will hold the screwdriver with it's spring pressure



Grab again with needle nose pliers and force the end towards the center while pulling out.



Or if you are good, continue sliding the screwdriver blade around while holding it on an angle that causes it to come to you.

I took mine out this moring... ... the hardest thing involved was removing the tubing from the airbox to the turbo. I used a scratch awl and pry underneath it, then was I got it started, I wedeged the stratch awl underneath the ring so it couldn't re-seat itself and pry around with another screw driver... ... . pretty simple and I am not the most mechanically inclined person out there. I do have to say though I have a factory box with factory filter and I really can't tell a difference... ... .
