Anybody know where or know someone with a used factory trip computer for a decent price? I already have the console and am envious of you guys that already have one. I bought my truck used, and didn't think I'd miss it. Thanks, Jim. ;)

IF your truck didn't come with a trip computer, the wiring cable that runs from the fuse block under the driver's side of the dash up to the overhead console probably has only two wires in it, for the overhead lights and the high-mounted stop light, I believe. To run the overhead console, a new, more complex wiring harness must be used, as well as a smaller interconnect cable up top.

With the much appreciated assistance of a local diesel guru, and at great personal risk to mind and body, I was able to ferret the numbers off a 2001 truck on an undisclosed local car lot. My chum was able to source me these part numbers for my 99 QC. There is no reason to believe that they would have different part numbers on later trucks. Use these numbers at your own peril.

Main Harness: 56045921AD

Upper Harness: 05013608AA

I would think that used trip computer modules with all functions working would be a precious commodity, with an equally precious price, with a 5-second or 5-foot warranty. I's gonna get a new one from the dealer, as soon as my plastic has stopped smoking from the last round of... . um, excess.

Good luck. :D

Just priced this setup for my son's new Cummins. Without any labor the parts were right at $1600. Most of this is for the new harnesses that you need if the one's you have don't work. My son's truck does have part of the correct wires cause the temp plugin is on the hood..... Hope this helps... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . Pete

Price out the harness numbers above. $1600US for the harnesses and computer is extremely high. Are they charging you for more that the two harnesses, the temperature sensor and the computer module? The temperature sensor shouldn't cost much.  The computer costs *much* more than the harnesses.

I believe that the temperature sensor receptacle on the hood is on all the trucks as part of the underhood harness (correct me if I'm wrong; my truck has it). The above harnesses run from the driver's side fuse block assembly up the 'A' pillar to the center overhead console. Wiring is included in the harness to run the electric rear view mirror, if you ever have occasion to get one. The Two harnesses, the temperature sensor and a computer module should be all you require.

Have you ever seen the display module(?) used or in a junk yard? I can see buying the harnesses new, but if the display unit(?) is that much, I'm not sure if I need it. ~Jim. :(
