Trying to get my engine hours display i held the odometer button in while turning on the ignition switch, the instrument panel fully lit up, all annunciators on and gauges going to max full scale and later backing down in step test fashion. In the trip meter/miles (odometer) area the following would appear in sequence: S 127,
. 285, C 447, can anybody tell me what these letters & numbers dots & numbers mean?. Any info would be nice and appreciated. thanks, james.

Not sure what those all mean. but to get to your hours all you do is press the trip buttom a few times. (end one in from the right) it rotates through the MPGs,DTE,trip, hours, blank, (DTE & Trip could be flip floped)

I re phrased the text, i know engine hrs can be seen by turning on the ign switch & then holding in the odometer button until the display changes to hours. i'm still wondering what those letters and numbers mean. thanks.

What you did was run the instrument cluster diagnostic test. The codes that displayed are diagnostic codes stored in the instrument cluster.

I'm sorry, I can't find those codes in my manuals. [Actually, I've never been able to find the body codes in any of my manuals... I don't know where they hid them. ]

Ryan

Thanks for the info Ryan, i'll do some hunting in my 06 manuals and see if i can find something that will shed some light on those codes.

Just for clarity, I think you know this already but the thread is a little confusing...

Press and hold button THEN turn key = Instrument diagnostic (all lights on, gauges cycle).

Turn key THEN press and hold button (for about 5 sec. ) = Engine hours displayed.

Engine hours will simply revert to normal display after several seconds.

Instrument cluster test does it's "thing" while these "codes" cycle a few times, then reverts to normal.

I've been wondering what those "codes" meant as well. I get similar but different numbers on my '06:

S 116

, 281

C 447

If I do it from "trip" (vs. Odometer) the decimal point from the trip display "carries over" to these , i. e. , S 11. 6, "," 28. 1, C 44. 7. The symbol displayed ahead/with the 281 is a full segment (lower right), not a decimal.

I have a feeling these aren't fault codes but are probably software/firmware revision indicators and/or calibration constants for tire size and/or sending units. Just guessing though.

Seeing numbers so similar and following the same pattern makes me think that neither of us probably has an actual "fault". Still interested in what they actually meen though.

FWIW, I set my tire size to 30. 25" with my Flashpaq. It's the default setting in the Flashpaq, I think, when I choose to "use" that option. Going from memory, it reduced a (+) 2-3mph error @70mph to about (+) 1mph compared to GPS speed. Just food for thought here... nothing to back it up.

With the key on, you put the odometer reading into the trip mileage then push and hold. You will get the hours

Thanks PBrauer i think like you that it may be software/firmware. Is your truck an auto? maybe factory installed options relate to those numbers, in my service manual on the instrument cluster section i could not find anything significant. If anybody out there knows or could suggest where to look please chime in. Thanks. James.

Yes, mine's an auto, Laramie, 4WD w/electric shift...

One of these days I'll change "tire size" w/Flashpaq & see if one of those changes...

A friend of mine bought an 06' auto equipped the same as mine both ours are build date 06/06 and he displays the exact same codes as i do, i think it has to do with production run/build date equip package ID of some sort. Just thinking. :)
