Trip thru Yellowstone

I'm leaving Portland, Oregon September 30th heading to South Carolina. I am pulling a 7000# TT, I thought I might stop in Yellowstone for a few days. The weatherman is calling for rain/mixed snow; anyone with suggestions/experience? Can I still enjoy the park or should we head the southern route? Thanks for the insight.

jpolston... Yes I believe you can still enjoy Yellowstone. Probably more so than you would in July or August. You will more than likely hit West Yellowstone, MT first and you can get a campground there (National Forest or Commercial). Most of the tourist traps in West may be closed but the places the locals use will still be open.



Almost all of the tourists will have gone home and if you need people, you may get lonely. The elk and moose should be at the end of their rut and very visable. I have seen wolves in the Lamar Valley in the morning and off the Norris Road in the evening. Buffalo may be any place. If they are in your way a little rev of the Cummins will usually stampede them.



Don't visit the area without seeing the Grand Tetons and Jackson. You won't regret it.

Thanks WyoJim,... . I will probably enter the North entrance. Are you recommending heading out the South exit and heading to Grand Teton National Park and then to Jackson? Then I guess we could head to Rock Springs and get back on the interstate. Thanks for your help.

I think everyone should see the Tetons at least once in there life.

Bring some chains. Bring a set for the trailer to if you don't have any. It is a great place and would be even more so with some snow.

Love Yellowstone in the fall

Its great, particularily because you miss the crowds of June/July/August. One thing to keep in mind though - I suspect most if not all of the campgrounds are either closed or partially closed. Also a lot of the stores and resturants will probably be closed too. I think Mammoth Campground is the only one that stays open year-round. Mammoth is at the north entrance (Gardiner, Montana). Also, when I was there 2 weeks ago, the road between Madison Jct and Norris Jct was closed from 10 am to 6 pm, and the road from Roosevelt to Canyon was getting ready to be closed for the season. Still worth going, just makes it a little longer to get around if you are sightseeing.



The thermal features are really a sight on a cold fall morning. Have a good trip.

jpolston... . If it was me, I would go in the west gate from West Yellowstone MT. The Madison Campground is open until Oct 20 and it is the first one you come to and its probably located the best for driving the loop.

Yes I would go out the south entrance to Jackson, then down through Pinedale to I-80 or backtrack to Moran Junction and down through Dubois, Lander and then I-80 at Rawlins.
