Triple lock vs. single??

I am going to be making a purchase and need some feedback...



What are the different characteristics of each??



I know that a couple of different companies make both the single and the triple disk. How do they drive?

An ATS triple lok equipped truck won the Muncie street class SLED pull.

If were going to throw in opinions... .

I think any triple disc will hold more horsepower.

To support this... . ATS uses a triple disk, Suncoast, Goerand bros. etc.

I've already deleted one post from this thread. Only make comments on the aftermarket transmission vendor that you own - do not make comparisons to the others.

One thing to look at when asking about which will hold more power is, who's are proving to hold the power and who' are claiming to hold the power.



On a DTT single:



Jetpilot 885hp

Jim Fulmer 804hp

Opie 738hp, (who won Muncie 04)

CSutton7 740+hp (who Bullydog event 04)

Idaho CTD 700hp (24valve on #2 diesel)

Lawrence from DD 787hp

Mark from DD 740hp



That's just to name a few. DTT proves it others claim it.

Two excellent questions... not who is better and all that but what is the drivability difference? Maybe this thread will survive.

Stefan... ... ... Just one question. The names you put down as "holding the power". Is this power in use or just on the dyno? All this HP stuff is just so much crap till it's put to a point that you try to break the transmisson. This is not intended to start anything but HP on the dyno is not really related to the transmission.

Different characteristics of T/C's. Good question. I have ridden in trucks with ATS and DTT trannies. Since i don't own both, i don't know if i can comment on ATS without crossing the transmission line.



I will say this though, with all the high HP trucks out there running DTT's single, has anyone slipped it yet? I don't think so. So give me the best fluid coupling (DTT) and I'll still never slip lock-up. I'm happy as can be.



With all that out of the way, there is so much more to our transmissions than just a T/C. Who has the best package out there? Who does the most to make 3rd gear stronger, after all, it's weaker then the T/C anyway. How about all the other components that make things work? Do lots of research before making your decision. None of these things are cheap.



There is so much more that i would like to say, but don't know how without offending those who fall on the other side of the transmission debate. PM me if you want the full version of my story.

Preston, I can see two people in that bunch that didn't run at the track much, Me and Lawrence. I know he did most of his work on the dyno on the blue truck but the white one did allot of testing in the 1/4.



The only thing holding me back is me, I have the rims for slicks(borrowed) but my money focus is in a different area right now (you will understand later) once I got that deal done then you'll see me at the track, need the MPH testing too and to put her in the 11's as I've been 12. 65@114 on street tires when I was around 650 hp!

I'm very happy with my DTT trans and they have the best customer service I've ever dealt with. I had a trans, one of the others mentioned in this thread, other than DTT's in my 01' and was slipping it with less hp than my 04' has. DTT has been proven to hold.

Ive got quite a few hooks to a sled with this truck & this trans has been put through hell. I also pull a goose neck trailer weighing 12,000 lbs & i havnt touched this transmission at all. I do not tow with my fueling box on but my truck puts down 532 horse with the box OFF so i can turn it down only so far. Trust me the dtt single disc converter can handle anything you throw at it. Ive tried to break it & i cant.

It's seems that people would rather tell you how much power they hold or how great there TCs are rather than answer your original questions and the reason (I believe) for your post -



1) "What are the different characteristics of each??"



2) "How do they drive?"



Let me start by saying I am not a transmission expert and do not claim to be - having said that here are some of my novice observations -



I believe that the decision should be based on the amount of HP you have or intend to have AND which transmission manufacture you decide to go with. I ran a single disk for about 10K miles then switched to a three disk setup. Comparing the two I can tell you that the triple shifts harder - does it hold better ??? Not sure I'm not sled pulling and making 700hp. It "feels" stronger in lock-up but that is hard to tell - lock-up is lock-up to me as long as its not slipping. The reason I did the swap was for longevity and my increases in hp. "I" figure that three clutches would out last a single clutch. Anyway best of luck with your decision.

Are all those HP numbers posted calculated on an "inertia dyno" (Dynojet) or a load dyno (Mustang)????

So it looks like the fastest Cummins diesel pickups are running Triple disk converters.

Also the Cummins/Scott Bentz Dragster that broke into the 8's in the 1/4 mile is running a Triple Lok converter and trans from ATS.

You are not going to slip a quality single, so why hang the extra weight on it?

IMO, buying "three" anymore is like putting decals on the truck. It doesn't make any difference in perf, or life.

When locking the converter right after the 1/2 shift at WOT with 700 HP trying to move 6500# no matter what the quality of a single disc if the converter is "loose" enough to let the turbo(s) spool the single clutch will not hold. Reducing crank speed vs turbine speed differential is an acceptable method to improve clutch capacity & durability, but the sacrifice in drivability or performance is not worth the cost savings. It makes a huge difference in performance & life. If you are willing to accept sluggish roll outs and slowler turbo spooling for everyday driving & towing then a less expensive converter may be right for you.
