Hi:

I'm getting an intermittant check engine light, and did the key on-off cycles to check the code.

Got a code P-1693, which is "DTC Detected in ECM or PCM".

Does anyone know what this means, and what could cause it?

I've got a 2000 4X4 Quadcab 2500 Short Bed Ram 6-speed with about 31K miles.

I did notice a slight stumble at startup once...

Thanks for the help!

I had this exact same problem with my 2001... It went to the dealer 11 times for the SAME CODE. Nobody could figure it out, DC didn't know, etc. . I was told to put a piece of tape over the light and just drive it... . I drove it right to the dealer and traded it in... Between rental cars, dealer diagnose, etc. . cost me over 1500 dollars with NO fix... got sick of it. . Mine started at about 70,000 miles however...

You're not gonna like this...

I've got a P1693 today and my truck is dead. Looking like the VP44 gave up the ghost. Not fun at all. :{

OK, It is good to know that I am not the only one here seeing this code. I have been fighting this code for the past 4 weeks. Does not appear to cause any problems, or at least as at this point in time, but the dealer has no idea what to think.

That concerns me more than fact that the light is coming on intermittently

:(

I got a P1693 when my crank position sensor was on its' way out. Every now and then the truck would stumble and throw the code. Finally after a couple of months the tach stopped working and the problem was obvious. About $26 later the problem was fixed and the 1693 never cam back...

1693 just means there is a code in the Cummins (NonChrysler) computer and you have to have an Cummins equiped Insite computer to read it. It will not tell you in the Od window nor with OBD2 readers.

Thanks for the help.

I started another thread when more problems showed up, and sounds like the crank position sensor is the problem in mine too.

Since the starter has to come down, it would be a good time to install the oversized starter contacts at the same time. The stock contacks only last a little over 100k with normal use. It did mine at abou 100k and the old ones were just about gone. If you do a search on here you will find the person who sells them. They are VERY reasonably priced. If you choose not to change your contacts at this time, and your starter cranks and will not stop cranking, you will know what to do.

Thanks for the reminder!

I've got the oversized contacts in my glovebox waiting to be installed, and I was thinking the same thing.

I've been playing around with my new EDM 1. 5's trying to track down the reason for my smoke. I've had the throttle wide open a couple of times. ... gives me a quick 30 lb boost & lots of acceleration. I also got that(p 1693) which I don't understand but the( 0234) over boost code makes sense except with the boost fooler funtion of the EZ still plugged in, shouldn't blind the computer to the high boost?

What a bunch of crap...

Did the key click thing and all I got was a 1693, but hook up a scanner and there's a 1698 & 1699. Why don't they display on the dash? Damn DC.

Maybe those codes where stored from a previous time but not the current code that is triggering the CEL???

Just speculation, but I agree, it should tell you ALL the reasons the light has come on. But, then again, if it told you everything, then why would we need dealers and expensive computer equipment:confused: :)

nope, they showed up as currrent and historic. cleared them and they came right back, but still don't show via key clicking. new pump is on order. :(

My experience was good... for 2001, the crank position sensor was replaced by cam position sensor, same outcome, as it is getting flakier, stumbling and white smoke resulted along with intermittent tach reading of 0 RPM and MIL illuminating. I cleared the MIL and verified tach readout and no MIL, shut down truck and disconnected connector to cam sensor, started truck with cam sensor disconnected -- no tach reading and MIL was illuminated... *BINGO* my P1693 + MIL + intermittent tach was indeed cured with a $35. 35 cam psition sensor... replaced in 10 mins... Obviously, this may be unique to me, but I doubt it.

TSmith,

I have cleared this code about 20 times in the past 60K miles on a similar truck to yours, without any issues other than the hassle of seeing the check engine light, troubleshooting, and clearing codes. A repeatedly dirty IAT sensor was the culprit initially & then recently I checked and re-routed all sensor wiring to the banks module harness about 10K miles ago & haven't had a reoccurrence since. Good luck.

IAT sensor?

This thread sounds like my truck needs a crank sensor then. ???

On my way to church yesterday morn my truck stumbled twice and then tach went to 0 and then came back. Check engine light came on but otherwise seems fine. ???

I knew if I came here someone would have a thread aboot this.

I will doo a check for the oversized contacts while I'm at it.

Again - what is an IAT?

And does anyone not think that the crank sensor is my trouble?

Thanks guys!

My problem ended up being the crank position sensor going out.

I had a different post started due to the other symptoms (erratic tac, loss of power, etc. ) and had posted the problem fixed on that one.

My odometer code never did give me anything other than P-1693, and I haven't got a scanner tool to see if there were any other codes listed.

Easy fix, my sensor didn't get stuck like some other people's have, and it didn't take very long either. The check engine light went out right away too.

I also did the starter contact change while doing the work, which was a good idea. Already on one side half of the contact was worn through. '00 year model with ~ 34k miles.

Thanks for all the help.

Ox... you sound like one of the 'regulars' on the SnoWest site with all the aboot, doo, etc. , eh!
