I can tell you from much experience that if your batteries are getting weak you will encounter many warnings and trouble codes even though the engine starts and runs fine. If you haven't replaced the batteries yet do it and start from there.

While working on my torque converter lockup issue this past week, I continue to see the P0622 code being set. The service manual lists it as "An open or shorted condition detected in the generator field control circuit".

I had originally dismissed it to the fact that my batteries are going weak and that after a startup where the grid heaters have fired, it would take some time for the generator to charge them up. A couple times this would set the "Check gauges" lamp. Now that it is warming up, the grid is not cycling yet this code continues to be set. I clear it and it returns.

From what I can see in the schematic, the PCM is driving the generator field. Is this simply a generator beginning to fail? This may explain the need for the 18-02-99 reflash I did yesterday to fix the torque converter unlocking problem. That tsb seems to have been written due to noise from the generator getting onto the APPS signal.

Any theories are appreciated,

icarus

Well, that just might be reason enought to pick up a couple of those Optima Red Tops at Costco. I've been hoping to make it through the winter, but I knew it would only be a matter of time before the batt's died all together.

Thanks,

Had the batt. s die while parked in the garage. Took it in to have the batt. s replaced under warranty. The tech found the alternator to be operating intermittantly using the diagnosistic scanner. No problems since. Didn't have any symptoms before failure that I noticed. Unless the batt. s are fairly old, you may want to have it checked. Be a shame to drag down a new batt. with a bad altenator.

Just a thought.
