Those people have had it in for diesels since the 1980's. I don't think the 'Great Smoke Stories' has much to do with what's happening with CARB and the EPA.

the TMS is right off the highway... a bunch of 700hp carbureted gassers w/ no cats running around in a circle, but you're not allowed to run one on the highway right next to it??

well, unless it's an old car of course... then it doesn't matter.

Forrest

As far as old cars go, they'll make it matter. They will begin to smog check everything - if it fails, no registration, can't drive it. It is deemed 'inoperable'. The next step is a law (usually a local ordinance) that does not allow 'inoperable' or unregistered vehicles on your property. The city/county/whatever tows these off and they are crushed. Makes CARB, EPA, tree huggers, and car companies happy. Myself, I'll shoot 'em if they come anywhere near my property...

older cars are grandfathered... they can't require you to add modern smog equipment to an old car that wasn't required to have it when it was originally built...

so, I can go buy a late 60's big block car, run it on 110 low lead fuel so rich that birds are falling out of the sky, and that's totally legal...

I realize it's an imperfect world and an imperfect system, I'm just saying is all... I don't differentiate between race cars and on-highway cars... they're blowing into the same atmosphere. hell, you can go BUY a smog exemption for a vehicle that doesn't get driven a lot if you register and insure it as a collector car.

we've already got plenty of laws about inoperable vehicles... they can't be in plain sight, and a car cover isn't a way around that!

Forrest, in Australia, nobody has a gun of any sort. Maybe it wouldn't matter to you, but if you have one now, like us NRA Lifers do, you couldn't have it in Australia. The politics of that is fodder for another entirely different thread. But rest assured the social attitudes in Australia are much more restrictive that even in California. And who wants to drive on the left side of the road?

yeah, their gun laws are hosed...

but they get to drive 2 strokes on the street! :D

I wouldn't really move, but the USA is dying from the inside these days. :(

Those commies are going after the truckers right behind this action. Visible smoke is the killer for our beloved diesels. I am now smoke free by personal choice. I loved it but am no longer a hp junkie. We need to ,as a group, be concious of our visible pollution. When carb cracks down others will follow. We are in violation of epa so we dont really want to attract too much attention or they will put edge and tst out of business. Im pretty sure epa has intake and exhaust mods written into the rules. Its just not enforced. YET. That includes bigger turbos and exhaust. We are on thin ice and its melting fast.

The reason I differentiate between street legal and special applications (racing) is just the shear percentage of polution caused on the street vs. special events. Would it be accurate to speculate that over 10,000 miles are driven on the street for every 1 mile on a race track. Shoot, the polution caused by traffic to the race track has to be several times more than what the race vehicles create. As I mentioned before, I'm not a tree hugger, but I do believe we need to be responsible. Your opinion may vary.

I hear ya, and my example was a little extreem... I just figure if a guy wants to feed his car copious amounts of fuel, let him!

what's next, annual mileage limits? you can only drive so many miles per year? fuel rations?

the "American Way" isn't perfect, but it's a damn sight better than any other way IMHO... this thinly veiled socialism/communism that's invaded our government over the years is a real bummer. :(

let's just ban stupid people

The problem I have with all this stuff is that the idiots running the show never get it right. Here in the Nazi occupied state of MD. you have to go to an emmissions test station and let some retard thrash you gasser every two years. z

The stations are managed and run by obnoxious liberals that could care less about the health of your car. Thier is no incentive for the owners to run a good operation because the state awarded them a contract and there is no competition. I had to sit and watch a guy try and run my car up to 55 mph on the rollers without shifting out of first gear:--) His supervisor ran over and stopped him after a while.

Anyway back to the smoke deal. Anyone ever hear of Centralia PA. There is a massive coal fire burning underground and spewing HUGE amounts of really bad stuff. It has been burning since the 60's (can't remember exact facts it has been a long time) and will continue to burn well after we all die. Basically it is still burning because it costs too much to put out. I say the treehuggers need to direct thier energy to large polluters instead of the easy target (taxpayers)

See Ya

Did I miss something here? I haven't heard or read an argument or detected any accusations or finger pointing. What are you talking about, TxDieselKid? Andrew, right? Are you reading something here the rest of us aren't aware of? So far, it looks like a discussion and not an argument.

As far as there argument about the soot and other stuff in the "modifed" pullers,I think they should go after all the heavy equipment at the construction sites and all the mining pits! They all put out as much soot as the pullers!!I know there is stricter standards comming in the construction industry in the next few years, but to say that the trucks are putting out all the pollution is bunk. I have many friends that are in there upper 80's and have been around heavy equpiment and diesel exhaust most of there lives and are in perfect health. How come there is a lot of the old farmers that worked from sun up to sun down and smoked like a freight train and lived into their 90's before kicking the bucket, yet there is a lot of people now dieing in there 40's that never smoked or drank?Could it possably be all the "safe" chemicals that they are putting into fuel and sorts now?Gotta agree their is a time and place for the smoke, and it gets old every time someone does it at every light. Mind you I can make a pretty good cloud when i want but sometimes i just like to have the HP without all the smoke. Makes the ricers wonder!!

WOW!!!

Im glad i live in Virginia in the mountains and don't have to deal with that stuff, liberals that show up here find out very quickly how we feel about our freedoms and rights. Kinda like throwing Meat to a hungry lion they don't stay very long...

calif

I agree with RonWeiss and detroitiron. I like to treat people the way I want to be treated. And I don't like others imposing their will on me! California is DEFINITELY the place where people seem to love to impose their will on others. (Boom box cars really annoy me) I'm a native Californian but would love to leave. The traveling I've done has shown me many parts of the country that are better than CA. Sure we have lots of sun, mild winters, no tornados (only earthquakes--big deal) but we also have very high cost of living, jammed traffic, rude drivers, overcrowding and lines everywhere(hurry up and wait). Since it's so expensive and competitive, it's not easy to find skilled people who take pride in their work. I recently called DTT to see if they had a trans shop they could recommend in So Cal but they did not. Tahts pretty bad with thousands of shops here! I've asked several shops about DTT and they just look at you with a blank look! Quantity and high profits are more important than quality here.

I can't wait to leave but family situations won't let me---YET. Sad part is California USED to be a great place to live. I hate to see what the next 10 years will bring. There are soooo many new diesels on the road out here now that I'm sure we all have a big target on our backs. :-{}

I would run the pulls regardless of what anyone says. The reason, I don't buy it that just cuz someone says you cant do the pulls, means that it has to stop. Run the pulls as scheduled and if by some chance it is stopped, SUE THE HELL out of them. If there is not a law against having the event, then have it. Make or force them for the next move, ie: courts. Make THEM use the court system to stop you. Sounds like you all are skeered already and are waiting for someone to say its all ok or something.

As far as the tree huggers go, I can understand what is meant by the smoke in the window thing for the little kids. Maybe we can make a lane just for the smokers and on for the non-smokers. At the same time (although I don't live in a city) I cant remember even seeing someone get smoked intentionally. The diesel technology has grown in leaps and bounds and the smoke is WAY down from say the first generation trucks.

For some reason , some people think we have to please everyone on everything . I also say that if you get smoke in your window, roll the window up. For some reason I cant picture this happening ALL the time. If it were happening all the time, I would move.

I know this response may not be liked but... ... its kinda like watching TV or going to a nudie bar. If you don't like whats happening , don't go, if you don't like what s on TV, don't watch it. I know this is about air quality and we HAVE to have it to breathe, but come on..... how much of this is really happening because of "heavily fueled" or modified pick-ups in everyday life, or because of some truck pull event?

Now, where can I sign the petition at?

I haven't seen this on the news yet (a little long)

I've been watching this thread for several days, and was under the impression that the situation would be deemed newsworthy. Evidently not, at least in Southeast VA. I haven't seen or heard a word about it. Of course, I'm not a news junky, either. We still can't ignore the potential for damage to the image of diesel operators, either on the public streets or in racing and competitive venues. I've kind of been waiting for an update, and some clarification, from the threads' originator(s).

As much as we've kicked this around, and occassionally gotten off topic, so far as I know, all the concern is still over rhetoric and propoganda. Has the issue been clearly defined and finalized into something that we can point to and declare, 'This is what we must defeat'? If so, then let's get on with it. I read about a petition but have yet to see it or hear of its contents, or seen a website address where it might be viewed.

And if said petition is to be presented to the California legislature, then non-California citizens' signatures on that petition may well render it invalid. I agree that the organizers, promoters, sponsors and track owners will have to add their weight to the fans and competitors in order to be heard as a unified body, (and a healthy block of potential voters). So, having said that, is there a petition, what is its status, and when and to whom would it be presented, and what would the preferred outcome be? Again, food for thought. If there is a plan and not just ranting and raving, let's hear it. I'm sure there is abundant support and interest in the TDR membership.

Are you reading something here the rest of us aren't aware of? So far, it looks like a discussion and not an argument.

I didn't want it to turn into an argument either. I have no problem with people who don't like the smoke such as Ron making their point, but the statment HERE might not point the finger directly, but it could have been very easy to start flaming from there.

Has the issue been clearly defined and finalized into something that we can point to and declare, 'This is what we must defeat'?

Yes it has. It is the CARB shutting down sled pulls ran by the VTPA that were to happen in the past 2 weeks.

I read about a petition but have yet to see it or hear of its contents, or seen a website address where it might be viewed.

In responce to this I offer a post from D-C...

I have the petition if you want one please email me and I will get u it It will also be on the site soon so you can just down load it

Andrew,

Still looks like a discussion to me...

And I don't want to see the sled pulls halted.

I guess my biggest concern is that the younger people watching these pulls will think it's Ok to blow major smoke on the road. And it's not OK in my book, CARB watching or not.
