Could anyone recommend a mechanic in the Tucson,AZ area familiar with 2nd gen motors? My 94 TD is having fits when trying to pull hills. When I put my foot in it it starts to miss then dies. After a couple minitues it starts back up and runs ok till the next hill. Am spending a few days in Tucson before heading back to Wa. and would like to get it fixed

Have lift pump checked. Sounds like your loosing fuel pressure. Possible fuel filter plugged, but mor than likely lift pump. Do you here a ticking or slight knocking sound from the left rer of your engine if so likely fuel pump spring on plunger broke.

Thanks for the advice. I was kind of thinking the same thing. When we get to Tucson I plan to get it replaced. Really windy on I-10 today so we hunkered down in Lordsberg, AZ at a KOA.

Search the Travel Companion, look for member CJ8Rockcrawler; PM him or give him a call. Since he lives there, he may have a clue.

That won't work on the Travel companion Fest3er it only give cities and phone numbers and codes to what they can do for you (unless of course he is the onnly one listed for that city).

But he can do search with his user name and pm or E-Mail him.

(Just put your pointer on the line under his user name and a list of options will appear. )

KWirtz, I know you have more important things to do right now, but when you get a chance, post up some truck info and where you're from.

Are you from a warm southern climate where the fuel is not blended for winter? Could you be experiencing waxing/gelling problems as you climb into colder altitudes? Start with the most simple and likely problem first and change your fuel filter and add a little treatment to your fuel.

Thanks for any and all advice. I had the lift pump replaced along with the lines and filter and the rig seems to be running better. The mechanic suggested the fuel cutoff solenoid might be weak too but I'm planning to just wire it open and make it back to Wa. this week as a $500. 00 replacement seems a bit much for a "maybe". I spent a week in -10* weather in Mn a couple weeks ago that might have caused some gelling issues too. Either way, when I get home all the lines from the tank forward are going to be replaced by yours truely. If in fact the cutoff is failing, a $120. 00 replacement from Geno's seems more in line. Or the old choke cable might be my first choice...

KWirtz, the gelling would only lasted with cold temps as soon as it warmed up the fuel would un gell. if it didn't gell in mn then it did not gell at all ( They probalby still winter-rised fuel).

Pull the over flow valve and check the spring length. Should be . 550 ths, just a tad over 1/2". If not just be careful you don't break it. When I do mine I just massage it to the correct length. Carefully.

The trouble worsened in the 90* weather and I had more diagnostics done in Phoenix. Turns out the injection pump was failing. Had a rebuilt installed in it and it got me back to Washington state. Lot of bucks but what to do when your 1500 miles from your tools... It solved the dying problem but now I'm experiancing a loss of power with the new (rebuilt) pump. Runs great if I'm not pulling big hills and the MPG's are still around 15 pulling a trailer which I can live with. Something tells me that the timing needs to be tweeked. When I find time I'll look for a good thread on how to adjust the pump timing.
