Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Truck acting up

I was riding with my buddy today in his 99 3500 4x4 dually when his truck started doing some weird stuff. His check engine light is on and when your going down the road it dings and the abs light comes on then all the gauges go to zero. They dont all go at once some freeze and some drop at different times but it is odd. Checked all connections under hood. He does have the overhead Trip meter by the sun glass holder and i was told you could read codes from there? Any suggestions?

switch the key on and off 3 times consecutively and the truck will give you the codes in the place of the odometer, not the overhead console. To see what the codes are, I believe there is a list here on TDR somewhere.

The '99 doesn't do the ignition switch trick. You'll need a code reader.
