Anyone using a slide in truck camper that has a fender mount CB? Just wondering if it clears the camper?

Or what type of setup you have with truck camper?

I ran a surface mount on the door... it just barely tagged the overhead once and a while. For my run to UT, I placed a 102-inch whip on the rear jack mount of the slide-in... worked well.

Yep, I do and it clears the camper overhead. This photo is on my 3rd gen truck. I moved it from my formerly owned 2nd gen truck. It's a Firestick mount made for a Dodge.

Here's a look with the hood open:

I have a fender mount on my Mega and Arctic Fox 811 with zero clearance issues. Friend with 05' QC has his CB mount at the same place as Bill Stockard. No clearance problems with his new S&S Camper.

This past weekend I saw two truck camper mounts that were attached to the

jack mounting plates. It had a flat surface that truck owners then placed a magnetic mount antenna on... .

Did you have to use a "no ground plane" set up, or does the metal jack mount provide enough ground? I'm thinking of doing mine this way. Or, did you use a gronding wire? I've heard that works too.

I used a separate ground wire... a 4ga wire grounding the mount to the body/frame and a 14ga wire from the antenna mount to the radio chassis... my SWRs were around 2:1 even having all that antenna right next to the camper.

I also wrapped the antenna with heat shrink, which only caused low receive. I would use a tennis ball knowing what I know now...

Did you ground it to the body of the camper or the truck? And why did you have to do both to the body and to the radio chassis? Also, how much did your antenna stick up above the camper? I have steel jack mounts, and if I put the antenna where I'm thinking, a 102" whip will clear the top of the camper by over 50".

Thanks

I grounded to the body of the truck and the camper (this helps with SWRs)... same with grounding the radio to the antenna, which also occurs through the outer braid of the coax, but I like overkill.

Mine was only about 36 inches higher than the camper... about 14 feet?

I think you can just see it on the rearward jack mount in this picture... I made a bracket that bolted to the jack mount, just in case I had to get the camper off the truck in a hurry.

So, today I bought a 102" whip, mounted it on my left front jack mount, used my coax I already had on the truck, and everything seems hunky-dorey! My SWR's are below 1. 0 on all checks. I have the whip mounted on a 6" spring on top of the mount. I plan on using tennis balls the keep the rubbing in check.

I didn't have to use any other grounding wires. I checked my jack mounts and they are grounded to the chassis, so the antenna mount is grounded to it and no other grounding was necessary.

The antenna sticks above the roof about 50". Not the 2/3 that is recommended, but it seems to be okay.

Steved, thanks for the input!
