Have a question about the wiring harness and leads for a truck cap.
I have found a thread about a wire at left rear of truck. I have read Joe Donnelly's article in Issue 83 on pg 79.
When looking under my 2015 2500, I did not find anything on drivers side.
I did find 3 wires on passenger side between bumper & spare. 1 red/white, 1 white with a stripe (not sure of stripe color) & 1 orange or peach.
Looked at the 2015 body builder upfitter wiring info, but data is not available other than info on battery connector.
Should be getting truck back today from Rhino Liner and I'll try to meter the 3 wires that I found.
But any info or guidance will be appreciated.
Am I in the right area for the wire for the cap brake light?
Thanks
Joe

When I put the cap on my F-250 I pulled the left rear tail light out to get at the wireing harness. Fed cap wire in from the stake pocket hole and spliced in that way. Then disconnects so I could take the cap off.

see issue 85, p. 81. The wire is tucked into the harness covering, and the last inch is covered with black rubber/plastic insulation over the regular white/violet.

Thanks Joe, will look for it as soon as I can. I did have a chance to look at the 3 wires on passenger side and one does look like white w/violet stripe.

Thank Gary. I read your thread before I started this one. That is how I knew about Joe Donnelly's article in issue 83.
How did you do with dealer and/or ARE?
Joe

Joe,

I have not talked to the installing dealer about it. As they butchered it, didn't see much hope of them fixing it.

I did send an e-mail to ARE with pics and got this as a reply about the wiring:

"Thank you for taking the time out to provide us with such a detailed description of your experience, it was really helpful. Just to give you some background on our products and dealers we do provide every dealer with wiring diagrams for all the various truck makes and models. This diagram does not come directly with every cap or tonneau cover purchase but it is available to them through various channels, such as our dealer web pages, email, and by phone if needed. We try to do our best as the manufacturer to set our dealers up for a successful installation of our product and the options you as the customer have chosen."

I do not fault ARE. They made a fine cap and I easily recommend it but your issue is just getting maybe 3 wires correctly connected. There was no compensation request made by me and none offered by ARE. I wrote it off to my fussy nature about this keeper of a truck.

Brocky,

Thanks. Not sure. I think it does come down to pride and Attention to Detail much like any task. But what really got me was that I'm pretty good at lots of electrical projects and for an accessory shop to do that level of work was just unacceptable. Joe D's pic shows how simple the CMHSL wire tap is but you sure can make a mess out of it. Just live and learn.

Still really like the cap.

Thanks Joe, I found your picture in issue 85. I do not have a wire sticking out like you show. Will open the harness on the drivers side this afternoon and see if the wire is inside.
I did find 3 wires on passenger side between bumper & spare. 1 red/white, 1 white with a stripe (possibly violet) & 1 orange/peach.
Looked at the 2015 body builder upfitter wiring info, but data is still not available other than info on battery connector.
Thanks

Here is an update. I looked around the harness on drivers side, removed the tape and there was no wire. Tested the white w/violet stripe on passenger side and it is for the CMHSL. Talking to ARE dealer, he said the 2014 Ram that he just finished, the wire was on the drivers side. He said he also looked on drivers side and did not find it. He also tested the white w/violet stripe wire that was on passenger side and found it to be for the CMHSL and wired it. Do not know if RAM changed it in 2015 because the bodybuilder guide wiring diagrams are still not available. I still have 2 more wires sticking out next to the one for the CMHSL that I haven't figured out what they are for. With high temps in the 20's, may have to wait for spring to do that.
