I was driving on the freeway and suddenly the alternator guage started jumping, power lost, oil light comes on. I coast to the shoulder and go out and check things out. All LOOKS okay. Engine has all its oil, etc. Shutoff solenoid does not seem to work. i. e. if I jump it to the battery no spark on the connection to suggest its pulling any power as the KSB solenoid would. Fuel filter has fuel.

Called Cummins dealer. They suggested holding the shutoff lever and try cranking. See if it gets started. The foreman said if that works its the solenoid and I could wire it (the lever) to the "ON" position. I tried this to no effect. I thought I would need to bleed the fuel lines but he said no, not necessary if it fails it won't let air in the system. ???

I tried and tried but could not work the shutoff solenoid loose. Tried open end wrench, Crescent wrench, even hammer and chisel.

It was getting dark so I had the truck towed to the nearest Cummins dealer 100 miles away in Knoxville. They won't start working on it until Tuesday.

Any suggestions??? I have not heard of holding/wiring the shutoff level.

Look forward to hearing any responses as I might get this fixed sooner than Tuesday for a lot less money!!

Also should note that previous to this I had a few spells of low power on grades intermittantly but not for several days.

Is it signs of a failing pump or just the solenoid??

Previous owner tells me pump was reworked by a shop of the first owner. Maybe they screwed it up ?

TIA,

Brian

Over the phone think the shop foreman thought I had a later engine with an inline pump. Any idea on the Cummins book dealer time for replacing the shutoff solenoid?

Thanks,

Brian
