Okay i come home from going out yesterday evening, i see my 2000 sitting down the road from the house, figured dad went somewhere, got home and the car was gone from the driveway. . He said the truck just quit, no sputtering or anything, im thinking first fuel system or pump, any ideas? Im going to check and see if their is fuel in the filter housing, if so then i may have a intank problem, or am i wrong? Any Advice would be helpful, im going to see what codes have been thrown if any show up also:confused: ... .

*update*
went and checked truck, bumped the starter, LP pump is running, makes me think the intank pump is shot or could i be wrong, im getting a code 1693 but take in mind that hasn't been cleared since i had the TP sensor go bad. . Truck cranks fine just no start, no fuel getting to Inj. pump it appears... If anyone has any ideas please send me a msg asap... dad needs the truck for work... .
Thanks

Pull the codes with a scanner, sometimes when the VP44 dies it doesn't have time to send the codes to the odometer.

Lift pumps can run and not pump fuel too:{ It is possible your fuel supply is weak or dead and it took out your expensive injection pump.

okay, no fuel in the filter housing. LP is running, now whether or not its working im not sure, other than it is cycling, is there a way to check the pump in the tank? If anyone knows i need a answer or advice asap... what a bad time for this to happen. As for the codes, this happened yesterday evening early, so im sure its had enough time to put the codes to th odometer... .

Your supply pump is not in the tank, it is just behind and below the fuel filter housing on the right side of the block.

If you can find a member in your area with a SMARTY they can pull your codes from the ECM and see if there are any others.

If the truck stopped suddenly, the codes may not be displayed. It happened to me that way and they never showed up but with a scanner there were 3 others#@$%! Another friends truck had p0216 last week with a scanner and it wasn't displayed in the odometer and the truck was still running:confused:

John

so the LP is the supply pump from the tank then? all this time i thought there was another one in the tank. . or maybe im just having a brain fart. . well i guess its time to search for a LP. . No one in my area as far as a member that i know of or anyone that has a smarty

i have found that autozone and Oreilly's has the pump(looks like the lp pump) for 160. 00... i guess its about at broad as it is long. either get a scanner and check it or just go ahead and buy the pump. . Or is there another option where i can just hook up another pusher pump back on the railing near the tank and forget about the LP????

Well neither place has a code scanner, Oreilly's stopped loaning them out, and the one that auto zone has i was told would not scan all the codes if they were above 600number...
Could it be the Fuel pump relay? I know im getting some fuel to the filter housing, hard to tell by myself. . guess its to a garage for me...

Try to find a local diesel shop that will help you out. STAY AWAY from the dealer!!!! Have them pull the codes and post them here on the forum for some input. If you have multiple VP44 codes, well just order a VP and get it changed.

Good luck,

John

Wyatt,

Mine just did the same thing last week, it just quit with no warning, no spuddering, etc. I cycled the key and there were no VP codes on the odometer. My truck would actually start up and idle after I primed the pumps? They hooked up a scanner to it yesterday and pulled the 0216 code. The VP44 was the problem. I had 130K on it.

I'm thinking of getting a Smarty now so I'll be able to pull all my codes in case this happens again.

Good Luck

So it could be the Vac pump also?, not married on this end but my other bills might complain if i were to buy a Smarty without consulting them first LOL... I went ahead and bought another LP while in town. . I may have someone that can come check it, not for sure yet, he used to work for a dealer and now runs his own garage, he has all the gadgets from what dad said, so we will see. She may have to set a few days or so. .
Thanks guys for all the input. Mine has 135+ on it...

Wyatt,

Not sure if I'm understanding you correctly but the VP44 is not the Vacuum Pump it's the main injection pump. It's about $1200 not including labor. Most likely if your LP is working it's your main injection pump that went bad.

I was told to crack injector lines 1,3 & 5 with a 19mm wrench and crank the starter. If you don't see fuel coming out of one of the lines then you have a bad pump. In my case, I did have fuel coming out of all of the 3 lines but I still had a bad pump.

Hopefully you don't have the dreaded 0216. Let us know.

P1688 Internal Fuel Injection Pump Controller Failure Internal problem within the fuel injection pump. Low power, engine de-rated, or engine stops.

P1689 No Communication Between ECM and Injection Pump Module Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection pump. Low power, engine de-rated, or engine stops.

These are the 2 codes I had when my truck stopped.

John

Well i bought a code reader for about 60$,, the only codes im getting are 0234 and 1688. No 0216 code, so????????? Should i curse now or later. the reader that i have doesn't go into detail just give me the codes...

Thanks

John posted this for you.

Thanks guys, before i forget i also had a 1693 when doing the key cycle. Thats not what i was wanting to hear but what does one do. . Well i guess i better start looking for the cheapest one i can find, there are a few Cummins places i can call. Roanoke va. and i think there is a shop over at Abingdon va. .
I will have to have someone change it out, i don't have the tools or the time, damn the credit card is going to get a work out over this one...
The guy that dad is going to talk with this evening is a diesel mechanic so we will see what he says and i will let him know what i have found out with the code... The poor thing she looks so helpless sitting at the end of the drive.

Thanks guys for all the help and if i may have not acted like i knew what i was talking about this weekend in my reply posts, i was severely sick(i think food poisoning) Never again will i eat Mcdonalds that was rough and i had to leave work an hour after getting there this morning so im hanging around the house today, i was just to weak from not having anything in my system...
