Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Truck Died on Me Last Night

Guys,



My truck had to be towed home from the Colo Springs last night night after shutting down on me a couple of times yesterday. The truck also would not shut down when running and would make a loud buzzing noise that really concerned me. I'm wondering what you guys recommend I check. I know for starters I'm going to check the fuel shutoff solenoid but I don't know where to go from there any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would check that shutoff solonoid. Starts but wont shut off, and shuts off at random? That's where I would start. I've heard of some guys running a "choke cable" instead of the switch... .

Take that shutdown solenoid off and throw it out..... just kidding.



I'm a firm believer in the shutdown cable setup... . works flawlessly and has no electrical gremlins to interfere with its operation.

Well after checking the solenoid it seems to be bad. The only bad thing about it is that is $285 from Cummins. Also decided to test the lift pump but I think its ok since pressure was 31psi at WOT and 26 otherwise. Finally do you guys think that the overflow valve could be the cause of the buzzing noise?? The truck has approximately 200,000 miles on it so I'm thinking it might need to be changed. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

From the sounds of it I would have to say that the buzzing noise is your starter sticking. I would also have to say that is why your fuel shut off is not working properly. If I was you I would change the starter contacts and the plunger first befor the solenoid. If that does not fix it then replace the fuel shutoff realy. If I would have replaced my contacts first I would have saved 350 bucks. Live and learn.

FYI: Lots of folks have said that the plunger will last through several sets of contacts - just give it a good cleaning and remove most of the pits if you can.



Just trying to save some folks some bread - not trying to reduce anyone's bottom line.
