Hey folks, the truck in my signature died on the road last night and I towed it to the nearest dodge dealer and left it there. I suspect a fuel pump problem . I am going to go back there now and check for codes . If in fact it is the lift pump and or the injector pump what should I do... let the dealer fix it or fix it myself with possibly better parts. I am pressed for time as the hurricane has everything around here screwed up and I am scheduled to go to work in china in a few days. I just don't want to pay alot for parts that may fail again, is there a bulletproof way to make this repair, are there part #s that I should look for if the dealer does the work? please give me all the info you can so I can make an informed decision in the morning when I talk to the dealer. thanks in advance

Let us know if you find any codes. If it turns out to be the lift pump, I would get one from cummins & replace yourself. Did you bump the starter & see if the lift pump cycles? If it turns out you have the dreaded dead vp44 code you may want to change it out to a hot rod vp44. Seeing that your pressed for time I would be surprized if the dealer could get you in & out before you leave for China.

unless you have plenty on money and want to give it away . Take it to Cummins . to check the lift pump on your truck remove or crack one of the brass plugs on top of the filter and try turning the strater bump a few times fuel will come out if its working . . If its the injector pump Cummins will do the job a lot cheaper. Ron Bissett in metro Louisville KY

My truck was idling at a stop sign and just died. I had no fuel pump and no fuel gauge. The odemeter read "no bus". After checking all the connections I could find, I found nothing. Then all of a sudden everything came back on, and I drove it home. Still cannot find anything wrong. Pretty sure it is a bad connection somewhere I just came back from the Bonneville Salt Flats and everything got covered in salt water.

I tried to get the codes by turning the key on-off-on-off-on but had no luck ... don't know if any codes are stored but none came up in the odometer. I am going to let the dealer troubleshoot it for me in the morning. I hate to hang my *** out like this ... last time a dealer worked on the truck a new clutch cost me $1700. 00(I wasn't home to do it myself). BTW it sounds like the lift pump is working and I got fuel out of the filter so it might be the injector pump and not the lift pump.

I'm a newbe! What does VP44 code mean?

I am also experiencing a fuel problem. I replaced the filter and the lift pump won't pump a drop of fuel to the filter.

I had been experiencing a loss of power on very hot days and an unsteading idle when the clutch was in. But other then that, the truck ran great. I took my truck to the local dealer. They informed me that the lift and injector pumps were both bad and wanted $3300 to fix it.

After doing some parts cost research, I discovered that the dealer was way over priced on parts. Also found out that the dealer no longer sells the engine mounted pump. They now only sell the tank mounted pump.

I read one of the messages to someone else to contact Cummins for pumps so I'm off to do that.

What I need is advice on which type of pump to install (engine or tank mount) assuming I can get the orginal equipment and any pointers when installing the pump.

The lift pump prety straight forward. A couple of bolts & lines. You should still be able to get the frame mounted pump from cummins. I payed $155. 00 delivered to my door. I have a new 05 with the intank & we will see how well it holds up. It's going to be a pain to change if off of warranty.

The vp44 is a bit tougher to change & I've herd guys getting them from $1200. 00 to $1500. 00. Never had to change one, I'm sure someone will chime in that has if you decide to change it yourself. Yes dealers are way over priced for their parts & service. If it's not a warranty issue I don't go.
