Crusing down the road today about 30 mph. shifted into neutral to coast to the stop light and the truck stumbled and died.

Coasted into a parking lot and cranked it. . no beans... sounded like it was out of fuel. Tried again after about a min, no beans. Didn't even hear the lift pump or pusher pump firing.

Waited for about another min. and truck cranked over fine. Came home and check my lift pump pressures and showed 20. 5 idle, 17 WOT. Truck would idle fine but every now and then cough like it was sucking air. Water drain on fuel filter was tight.

Truck has been fine since but obviously I was alarmed as I just got a new VP44.

Any ideas or than to sell the truck?

Is it safe to assume, that you dont have a in cab fuel pressure gauge? If you dont, why not? How much fuel was in the tank at the time of stallin', and were you goin' down hill when it stalled?

Rob-

no fuel pressure gauge in cab. I've looked at a lot of them and I don't like the mechanical ones and all my friends who have electronic ones said the sensors crap out even if they are remotely mounted, etc. I have briar's gauge it works everytime.

I was going down a slight hill, nothing big. Fuel tank was 100% full.

How many miles you have on it since DC warrantied your VP44? You may have got another bad VP44. Are you running the same tank of fuel that your last VP44 died on? Late night fuel delivery man may have dumped gas in diesel tank thus lube properties of fuel is diluted thus new VP44 dying fast?

Holeshot may be on to something with the crank position, fuel timing may be screwed up, or maybe MAP Sensor it's used along with other sensors to provide fuel timing/control and can signal the ECM to cut power.

Just some thoughts to look at-

Must be that dang pusher pump....

Just kidding..... Sorry, I couldn't resist!:-laf Sounds like maybe the dealer may have replaced your VP44 for nothing. :( I also think it could be the CPS.

It has been less than 100 miles since the VP44 was replaced.

Sounds like it could be the crank position sensor. What is involved in replacing it? Is it a dealer fix only? I know I'm under warranty but somethings I like doing myself.

I did this myself a while ago. It was about a $40 part from a local Cummins dealer. Not difficult to change (even I was able to do it). Do have to pull the starter to get to the sensor. After that, the sensor is just bolted in. Simple really.

I do not know if this applies to your '98 but ON THE 2001 the Manual says:

OPERATION - DIESEL

The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) performs

multiple functions. One function is to detect engine

speed (rpm). Another function is to relate crankshaft

position and Top Dead Center (TDC) of the number 1

cylinder. Because the CMP is now used to relate

crankshaft position, the Crankshaft Position Sensor

(CKP) is no longer used.

The CMP is located under the Injection Pump and has a 3-wire connector attached to it. Check your truck out if this applies to your '98 let me know and I'll provide the instructions for you or hopefully someone with a '98 can help you.

His 98 does have a Crankshaft Position sensor. the 01+ do not use them.

I'd pay $40 to do it myself. Local dealer isn't worht $. 02 and it sounds easy.

Chance you have a p/n or instructions? thanks guys!

Mopar part number : 05015488AA

Cummins : 4002066 or 4002064

Got these off the Fritz's Website so not sure if they are still the latest part numbers.

That 4002066 is also listed under APPS (throttle position sensor) so you'll have to ask Cummins.....

I only have a 2001 manaual so I'd prefer someone with the correct manual post the directions.

I have to use my truck this weekend so I was wondering what are the chances of the truck not starting @ all? Mine didn't start for a sec, but then did and ran fine.

try checking the wire connections. if you can get at the wires easily [& safely], shake the wires around with the engine running. if the engine dies then, bad wire somewhere.

Issue #37

Issue #37 arrived yesterday, If I had only read it first before replying to your problem. Page #48 "Cranky Sensor" is all about your problem and the Crank Position Sensor. Gotta wonder about DC techs, they replaced your VP44 and in the article they replaced Jmadden's PCM before getting to the Sensor. The article doesn't give part numbers but says it is $37 at Cummins.

jerryrig-

does it go over how to install it by chance? Local cummins place has 3 of em @37. but their service guys are wieners and aren't real helpful with install ?s.

If anyone has done this on a 98, any help would be great before I try to install it.

About those electric sensor's for fuel pressure--I have been running a Westach for over a year, screwed into the fuel filter... ... . No problem---gives you the answer now--not when you get to the house to screw in the tester... ... ... R, J. B. ;)

azcummins, I installed the Dakota Digital guages and about 3 months ago and so far there have been no problem. I have them remotely mounted in a project box I got from Radio Shack. There are 2 fuel pressure senders that are hooked up one pre filter and one post filter, with a switch inside so I can moniter both pressures. Lights in the guages very closly match the dash lights and they automatically dim when turning on the lights. You can look at the guages at their name +.com.

jerryrig-

just replaced it. Really easy. I took lots of digital pics and will be doing a technical write up this pm.

Truck seems to be running the same, but all I did was crank it over to make sure it started.
