Truck died on me last night. It's my old 2001: Comp,DDII's,DTT auto, 166k miles. Was doing 65mph with cruise control on, hit the cruise button to bump down the speed and it died on me. Was only able to re-start once after it sat awhile, ran rough limped about 10 feet and died. Towed it to buddies house, he's a diesel mechanic. Codes:p1693 flashing the key, nothing comes up with his scanner, c. e. l. is on. Fuel: good pressure to vp-44 but no fuel to injectors. Comp: tried with it dissconnected, no difference. He thinks it's the ecm due to not being able to read any codes or possibly the camsensor. Ideas?

VP44 is Toast

F-15I Ra'am; It's dead dude!!! :( My truck, a 2000 QC Auto. did the same thing on Wednesday morning on the way to work. Accelerating away from a stop sign, it died as if you has shut off the ignition. Got the P1693 code flashing the key. Call the CT Coffee Night bunch and they said it's the VP44. Called my local Diesel Guru, and he said it sounds like the VP44 also, however try the Crank Position Sensor.

Well, I changed the CPS, No small job due to it being behind the starter, and it's bore had a layer of rust in it. Hook up the Batterys and I did a quick APS reset, Nothing!! Cranks, but no run. Have it towed to the Guru's shop, get a call a couple of hours later, VP44 rotor had sheared off. :{ Got to do some creative financing now; $1450. 00 Please. There goes the Rip's 4" Dual Exhaust, the Westach Gauges, The FASS pump and finishing the Veggie Tank. Sigh, and end of Rant.

The P1693 is a code for "P1693 (M) DTC Detected in Companion Module A fault has been generated in the companion engine control module.

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in PCM/ECM or DTC Detected in ECM

A 9Companion DTC9 was set in both the ECM and PCM. "

This means the Engine Control Module is sending a Diagnostic Trouble Code to the Dodge Powertrain Control Module, that the PCU Does not understand. This P1693 is quite common and is even known as that "Companion Code". My Guru has all the computer stuff that can talk to the ECU and that's how he found the Rotor Failure.

I find that 9 out of 10 codes don't show up with the key turning thing and that a code reader is needed. 166k, is that the original VP? If it is you did well, I figure I'm on borrowed time at 141,065 miles on mine, heck the VE in my 93 bit the dust at around 120,000

The VE in '89 went to 225+K with out a problem, till I had totaled that truck. The thing is that the ECM doesn't always get it's message thru to the PCM. The PCM doesn't speak Cummins very well, that's way Frank at Noble's Hi Performance has that computer stuff, it speaks Cummins! Moose00 Oo.

We took the camshaft sensor off today. That was fun, let me tell you, 32* and windy, to top everything off. Going to get a new one on it tommorow. Hopefully that'll cure it. If not we're going haul down to Cummins and have his buddy there check it.

There is a quick way to check the ECM. The Wait To Start Light.

WTSL works as usually = ECM is OK.

No WTSL = ECM KO.

Thanks Marco! I dont recall if we had it when we were trying to start it earlier. I will see what happens after we change out the camsensor. May have an excuse to upgrade to one of you ecm's ;) .

My wifes 2k just up and died leaving work a couple of months back. She did the 3 key cycles and read me the codes. There were 6 or 8 codes and none were the 0216. All pointed to the transmission... We had the truck tow'd over to a friend of ours that has a shop and all the fancy tools. With the code reader he did find the 0216. They cleared the codes and tried to start the truck which didnt. Codes were checked again and the first code that showed up was the 0216.

New pump was put on and down the road we went. . Truck has been running great since. .

We changed out the sensor last night. Still wont start. It does have a wait to start light. Pulled the pump harness and checked the voltage, checked out ok. My friend is still baffled as to why he cant read any codes other than the 1693. He's going to try to get a different code reader from a friend at Cummins and see if they have a pump tester. Almost certain it's the VP-44, just want rule everthing else out.
