Was driving into work yesterday and my baby quit. I was doing about 60 mph on the highway and the truck just started to loose power. I pushed the clutch in and was trying to rev the engine and the rpm just kept decreasing and the engine quit. Once I got pulled over I tired to start it again and it ran for 3-4 seconds then died. I changed the fuel filter (I carry a spare), bumped the starter and lo and behold no fuel pump noise. For other folks that have had a fuel pump go bad was this your experience, i. e. could not hear it run when you bumped the starter? On another note, was the truck ever scary to drive with no power steering/brakes, thank goodness there was no curves in the road. The truck was towed to the dealer , I am still waiting for a call with their diagnosis. I have about 22,000 miles on the truck.

I know Hind site is 20/20, but if you had put it back in gear and let the clutch out you would have had power steering and brakes again. Of course it would have slowed down faster :)

do a search i know there were a few with that problem and it was a wire located down by the A/C that was shorting out causing em to not run. Buddy's 03 did that and dealer wanted to say it was bad fuel and charge him for new lift pump, injectors and CP3 at around $5800 he said no and bought the stuff and changed it himself and it still didn't start the injectors weren't firing and i didn't see the post on the wire before he finally got the dealer to offer a trade for him. STAR blamed his problem on dirty fuel rusting the injectors shut and fuel problems are on you no matter the mileage.

Good to know, thanks. Well the verdict was it needed a new lift pump, it is being installed this morning, keeping my fingers crossed that they are right and it is not something else as others have noted above. Anyone have any thoughts on the new in-tank pumps? Have any been around long enough to comment on durability?

Wow, its a different truck!

Just picked up the truck at lunch and something sure made a difference. I see on my service sheet that, in addition to the in-tank fuel pump, they reprogrammed the ECM. I was eligible for the white smoke TSB and never did get it done (it was never into the dealer as I do my own maintenance), but I am assuming it is done now. The truck runs waaaay smoother, very noticeable on my truck. The idle is very quiet, I almost had to do a double take at the tach to make sure everything was ok. I had been running Seafoam every few tanks to cure what I thought was some injector noise but whatever they did to the truck, the injector noise is gone. I wonder if the injector noise was in fact being caused by a failing fuel pump?

Lift pump changed out?

The first time my 03 died was around 25,000 miles( new lift pump ), the second time was around 45,000 miles ( new lift pump ). The second lift pump was retro-fitted into the fuel tank, so far the truck runs better than before. Lift pumps are a problem for the 03 and 04's.

Both pumps went during winter. Reprograming the ECM is standard procedure for lift pump retro-fit to the tank.

I've had 2 lift pumps replaced. One at 29000 and the other at about 45,000. There is no warning--the truck just stops running--then the engine light comes on. The new lift pump is the one in the tank--when they installed it the fuel gauge didn't work properly so they had to install another lift pump. 2000 miles later so far so good. I've still heard people say they are having trouble with the in tank pumps but I guess they haven't been around long enough to have the problems the other style had.
