My 01' Dodge automatic dies when put in reverse or drive. It has a built TC and VB, TST Comp Box and 80hp Injectors.



I thought it was the torque converter going bad so I had it replaced but that didn't solve the problem. I am also getting a timing advancement malfunction code that won't clear, P1693 is the code. Not for sure if this has anything to do with it or not.



The truck will only do it after it has got hot and been drove for a while, but does it inconsistently. Otherwise it runs fine.



Has anyone else had this problem or have any ideas on what it could be?

I had a similar problem, but mine did it when cold and not hot. It was the VP was bad from the factory. Replaced and all was good.
 
You might try the cold weather reflash. Mine started doing it when we switched over to winter grade diesel. I put in Mach 2's during the summer and as soon as the winter grade hit it would die as soon as I dropped it in gear. Got the reflash done and haven't had the problem since. I'm not sure what the TSB # is but I'm sure someone will chime in with it... . or just do a quick search.



I was thinking VP also but I guess I got lucky that time.
 
Mine started after I had a transmission upgrade, much tighter torque converter. It did not do it once while I had the Mad ECM on it. I now have a drag comp with Jammer II's and it does it just about every day, first start up in the morning and evening. I believe mine is attributed to the tight t/c. Been trying first to put it into "N" before either "R" or "D". Irritating to say the least. No codes thus far.

The older 24v trucks have suffered from this problem for a a while..... Like mentioned above Dodge has a cold weather flash that helps with this problem.

I was thinking that my converter was pulling the engine down too... ... ...



Yeah thats my thoughts also ... my truck dont die but it gets close ... .



Buddys truck dies every time . .



I thought it had something to do with the timing also ,,,, the ECM advances the timing till the motor is up to operating temp.



Once my motor is warmed up no problem at all.



The comp is increasing the timing even more than the ECM is putting up durning Warm up mode . .



I will turn my comp box off for a few days and let you guys know if it helps ... .



naaaa forget that ... .

I turned the Comp off before shutting the truck down @ work yestuday ... . and this morning @ 5:30 Am I hoped in and fired it up and imediatly put it in Drive and the Motor Didnt Bog Down or even come close to dieing like it normaly does ... .



Complant : Comp Box Advances Timimg While the ECM is advancing the timing and it devoples a too much timing state and kills the motor when going in to a gear . When motor is below operating tempature.



Solution : Turn comp off till motor has reached operating tempature ,,,, OR,,,,Edge needs to set there box to where the fueling and timing paremeters are not changed untill the motor is at operating tempature.

There are "computers" in each of the ECM, Edge Comp, and VP44 components, and that they are an interactive system. Electronics don't always immediately/completely stop working when they fail and/or are otherwise not working to spec.
 
Thanks guys. THis discussion has been helpful. Going to try turning off the box first to see if that helps and then try the cold weather reflash.
 
Well it worked for me ,,,, then on the way to work today I was playing around running 5x5 and 4x1 thinking that when I shut her down Ill just go to 4 and the preset to 1 would do it for me for the going in gear dieing thing ... . tho my truck has never accutally died ,,,, I just dont like it. ...



as traffic hit and a soccer mom was on my arse ... I think I was in 5x1 at the time and I matted it ... toooooo much ..... sort of voilent ... . I think it down shifted two gears... YUCK!!!!! any way I stayed into it ... . and black smoke and a pegging 35psi boost gauge and I was outta' there.



About 5 miles down the road is a round about ... . I slowed and looked like I always do then I eased into the pedal ..... WHAT... . NO GO !!!!!!!!!

I reached down and flipped her on 5x5 and matted it ... . NO GO ... . Im fueling stock here . . !!!!!! ????



Stoped @ Smokes house and was playing a bit ... . did the whole wire tap test ... . turn Comp off ... watch pass. side mirror for a little black smoke if any ... . go 5x5 and fuel her up ..... and I had NO SMOKE !!! ...



Im Posi Tapped and grounded to my battery .



With a quick bat at the throttle on 5x5 the motor puked and stumbled but caught its self ,,,,, ???? ,,, gave her a quick bat and again a stumble ... BYE BYE VP Im thinking but praying its not ...



Turned the comp off and fueled like a maniac and it was fine ..... drove to work worked all night and just got home with comp off ... . WAAHHHHHHHH :<



Checked my ground its good ..... pulled on the wire and it didnt come out ... . will tare into it tomarrow and see whats going on ...



I may just have ROASTED COMP BOX NUMBER 2.



Good thing they have such a good customer service.



I hope the pump tap fell off some how..... if not I hope my Comp is fried ..... if not Im not going to say :< :< :<

Well tore into it today and the tap was good the ground was good ,,,,fired it up fuels fine with comp off but falls on its face with comp on.



Called EDGE with fingers crossed was on hold for 23 mins :< but they keep asking me if I just wanted to have them call me back ,,,and I just kept saying Ill wait... . HeHeHe



Talked to the edge guy told him my story and to my suprize.....



You have already used your 1 free replacement and we have had no complaints with the VEr8



UTT Ohhh ...



This is going to get ugly... ... ...



After explaing a few things and kissing some rear Ill have a new box for free by 10:30 am tomarrow
