An unedjumated guess: most likely bad batteries. The heater is soaking them and they will only crank the engine when they have recovered without heating the chamber. Bad batteries will NOT charge to cranking force even when hooked to a charger for days. Get the batteries tested, they need to be replaced in pairs.
I'm still for the ing. sw. , you confimed it your self when you banged on it , bang on it again to double check , but a bad connection will not always ack the same every time .
