I was 16 miles from home, truck was running fine, until I lost the trany. Not literally, but you would have thought I slipped the trans into neutral, I had nothing in 3rd gear,or 2nd gear, but I did have 1st. I figured the trany finally went. After I settled down a bit I noticed the tach, speedo were not working. The check engine lite was blinking,as was the wait to start lite, trans temp, and a couple other lites I dont remember. The other guages were reading fine. But the amp guage was reading around 10, which is about where its at when the grid heater is on. I drove about 5 miles in 1st when it finally shifted into 3rd (I think it was 3rd). I made it home but now the task of figuring out whats wrong with my truck. The OD lite was on even when I pushed the button, also the trany never locked the torq converter up,even when I flipped the mystery switch. I turned the key on and off three times to get the codes and they are,12-44-24-22-23-55. I do not know what these codes stand for yet. I have a hunch its the PCM but thats just a guess. I will not take it to the dealer here unless I have to. Any help would be great !!!!

Sounds like it could be the crankshaft speed sensor is bad or has a bad connection at a plug in the harness or at the computer. That would be the first thing to check when you lose the tach and speedo. If the computer doesn't get a signal that the engine is turning over the alternator won't charge and the instruments don't work. The transmission probably won't work either.

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me where to look for the crankshaft speed sensor? This is a new one on me,havent herd of it b-4. Thanks Again!

edgeman,

The crankshaft speed sensor is the tachometer pick-up. You will see it by looking at the harmonic balancer. It is on the upper left if you are standing in front of the truck. It's the only sensor close to the balancer.

. . or the PCM went bad. Try to pull the trouble codes. (do the Key on-off-on-off-on thing) See what it says, or even if it will do it. If the PCM lost power or died all together it could cause your symptoms.

I did key on-off thing. It flashed these codes. 12-44-24-22-23-55 I have no idea what they stand for,or if I did it right. Any ideas?

12-44-24-22-23-55

code 44 battery temp too high

code 24 TPS voltage too high

code 22 ECT temp too high (coolant temp)

code 23 Intake air temp too high

Try checking the voltage available at the sensors. They shouldn't be over 5V. Could be a few things though. .

broken ground wire

bad PCM

5V ref wire shorted to B+

Either way, the PCM sees high voltage on those sensors.

BTW, Code 12 is loss of B+ at PCM and 55 is end of code list. Both codes normally appear.

Thanks for the replies. I have to tell you that I admit defeat on this one. I took my truck to our local Kubota dealer. They scanned the codes and found the same codes I came up with, and they also found two spots where bare wire was touching something metal. I wish I could tell you all is well, but not so. The bare wires was responsible for all the warning lites going off and on,and the PCM is now needing to be replaced. I cant tell you all of the tests he did, but he tested voltage to all sensors and found the PCM not responding properly. So if any of you have a good sorce for a PCM, Im needing one real bad. The mechanic told me it would be 300 for a remaned, and 450 for a new one. Is this a bad price? I guess I need a little advice here. Thanks again.
