Truck Just quit while doing 70 MPH!

I was driving to work this morning on the I-355 / I-88 interchange (Chicago area) and my truck just died. It was a bit of challenge to get it stopped safely with no damage... . but I managed. I checked for codes and I have P 0628

I know there is glossary of codes on here somewhere but I am unable to find them. Could someone tell me what that code is or provide link to a list of diag codes?



I just changed the Oil, Oil Filter, Air, and Fuel filter 500 miles ago when I hit 45K miles on the odometer. I think it is the life pump, as I could not hear it running once it was dropped off in the service lot at the dealership.



Lastly, truck is 100% stock so I do not have any gauges, but for the past 1000 miles or so I have been getting unusually high mileage – about 23 MPG. I also just returned from a road trip and attributed it to that. But now I am wondering if the lift pump was running at a lower PSI which effectively leaned the truck out and raised MPG

The code is "fuel pump relay low"/lift pump. Did the code come on after you tried starting it when you stopped or did it come on when the truck actually died? Sounds like your lift pump went out. When you turn the key over and let go of the key does the pump make a noise?



I thought our trucks could run w/o the lift pump? Any feedback on this. Supposedly the euro trucks don't even have a lift pump. Just needed for priming.



The lift pump doesn't lean out your fuel injection. The CP3 pump acutally has two pumps in it and it actually produces the rail pressures.

Once I got the truck stopped, I tried to restart truck one time it fired... ran for about 2 seconds and quit... ... that’s when I checked for codes and seen that code. I tried to restart two more times and it did even try to fire. So I contacted road side assistance at that point.



Edit: I did try to bump start it in the dealership lot and did not hear the lift pump running, and now that i know what that code means I am almost sure its the lift pump.

Well it will be warranty. DC will replace it with an in tank pump. So far I haven't heard any problems with those and they're putting them in the 05's. I don't think there has been enough time to tell whether these will be more reliable or not. I have 51k on my 03 with the original lift pump.



I have a DD pusher pump sitting in my garage because I know my stock LP is living on borrowed time. And I don't really want a pump in my tank.

ARGH... ..... just heard from dealership..... they said YEP its the lift pump..... It will be 5 days to get a new one in... . (yes the in tank replacement)... . I was like *&^%$#@! I do have the extended warranty which covers 1st through 5 th day rental..... so I am going to point out to them that it should not take 5 days to get the pump in... . especially if they use fedex or ups instead of sending it on horseback

I've got an 05 and had pretty much the same thing happen to me. Around 20k I was driving the truck at 30 mph when it just died. Not only was the lift pump bad but the cp3 was kapput too. Be sure the dealer tests it as well

Ohh. . BTW, with my problem the dealer learned that the cp3 was bad too after the lift pump arrived and was installed... ... ... ...

If they have the car in the shop and take 5 days to do the pump call D/C and tell them you would like them to extend your rental coverage till the truck is back in your hands. It works every time

any idea which 800 number I should call to point this out to DC? Its not my fault it takes 5 days to get the part in stock. I think the customer service number is in the owners manual and the dealer is correct you must be the one to make the call. It is only a courtesy that they will usually give to make the consumer remember the service when you buy your next vehicle

Do You or any one know what warranty the lift pump falls under if you are over the 36K 3 year?

Im at 44K and i need one but if it is under the emissions warranty it would be free if it is under the 7-70 it will cost me $100 If it is under the 100K engine Im not sure what it will cost me?

No cost. If they try to charge you $100 show them the 1st or 2nd page of your warranty booklet. My dealer tried and I didn't have enough info to argue. Before I could get back to them with the booklet, someone there had already issued me a credit.



Funny, somehow the Juice had no effect on any of my warranties. Gotta love a good dealer.

I set up a apointment yesterday for tomorrow. The service writer said he thought it fell under the cummins warranty and it would be $100. 00. I said My book says that there is a $100. 00 charge for each repair after the truck has been in service over 5 years at any milage. I said it also says that DC Must by law warrant the fuel pump tank and lines under the emissions warranty for 50K miles and 5 years witch ever comes first im at 44K miles now. So either way it should be $0 for me. He said he would have to check. :-{} should be fun

The lift pump falls under the 7yr/100k cummins warranty on 03-05's. The $100 deductible is only applicable after 5 years. On the 06's the cummins warranty is 5yr/100k with no deductible listed. It is in the first page of the warranty book.





I emailed DC specifically to ask if the tank mounted lift pump was covered under the 5yr/100k cummins warranty. They said it is.



This warranty work should not cost you a dime, zip, zilch, nada...
