I am traveling to Milwaukee. My 02 stock 2500 HO keeps missing at high way speeds. It seems to idle ok, I wasn't sure if it was me or not for the last 100 miles or so, but the last ten, it is definetly the truck.

any suggestions? I don't know if we will be able to make it the rest of the way.

thank you all in advance

Pull over, cycle the key three times to on/off. stop with it in on, read codes in the odo window. Check fuel pressure too.

Do the 3 cycles of the key trick then look on this link at least it may help determine if there are any codes and what they may be.

If this just started and you fueled up in the last 24 hours or so it's probably related to the fueling. May also be a restricted fuel filter. Do you have gages? Notice any difference in the LP psi? If your truck is an automatic and you notice this while are cruising along around 55 - 60 and it seems to be "surging", it may be electrical noise causing the TQ converter to in and out of Lock/OD. If you think this is what's going on you can disconnect both positive battery terminals, wait about 1/2 hour or a bit more, reconnect them, then turn the key to "on" position (do not start), "SLOWLY" depress the go pedal to the floor, then "SLOWLY" return to the pedal to the top. Turn the key to "off" then start as normal. This will reset the APPS (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor), if this works it may last months or minutes - crap shoot? But at least if this works for any amount of time it'll give you some piece of mind to finish your trip. Then to "fix" you can get any one of the "noise filters" offered by any of the big transmission specialty vendors on listed on this site. When this happened to my 99 I went with DTT (Diesel Transmission Technologies) noise filter. IT worked for me and never happened again that was back in 01, at the time the filter was $30 +/-.

Hope this helps - have a safe trip. I'm traveling myself so I'll check back later this afternoon - post something up if you can and let us know what's going on.

If it stops completely, where are you at, in relation to Milwaukee?

I live 60 mi. N. of Green Bay.

I will help if I can, if needed.

Thank you everyone for your input

so far I hooked up a scanner. I found 2 codes over boost p0234 and p0234% both over boost. I had noticed the boost was a bit high as i was pulling the hills in PA. The truck is a 6 speed. I am also hauling an old 30' fiver. I just changed the fuel filter, and what was in the filter housing was dirty. The lift pump seems to be "working", by that I can only say that the filter primed. however I am currently unable to get the truck started.

I think know I need to bleed the injectors. I did fill up about an hour before it got real bad, but I do not remember, I may have noticed a bit of trouble before that just unsure if it was the truck or me until it got real bad.

I also don't think the the over boost codes will cause the problem? does any one know about that?

made it about 40 miles and it started acting up again. what should my lift pump pressure be. I am going to try and find a gauge. I see that there is a fitting on the injection pump. I am also going to pull the filter again and see if there is anything in the bottom of the housing again.

does anyone have any more suggestions?

Thank you all again

well, I am at the dealer. The tech here said that he could not find anything definet. He said that the lift pump flow was a little less then he would like to see it. and the pressure was a little lower then he would expect if the pump was still in the original location. The pump was relocated into the tank about 2 years when they did it, and the injection pump. I am going to have them do the pump anyway. no point in hitting the road not having fixed anything.

Just wondering since you were seeing some crud in the filter, could a pickup screen in the tank be plugging up? Not sure if there is one in the tank though.

does anyone know anything about bad fuel. what actually causes fuel to be bad? water, which I would see in the seperator. dirt which I would see in the filter/ filter canister. What else am I missing?

Water and dirt are the biggest reasons that fuel is bad. The in-tank fuel pumps are garbage and can create more issues than one could imagine. If you ever would disassemble one of those pumps and see the very restrictive orfice they feed the fuel through you would understand what I mean. There is a anti-rollover device inside them that shuts the fuel off in the event of a accident and that orfice only has a hole in it about the size of a ball point pen or a tad bigger, but, not much.

Have you had the fuel system checked for leaks that are allowing air to get into it?. A miss could also be caused because of air seeping into the system..... Andy

I believe if you have an overboost condition the ECM cuts back fueling to the injection pump.

Algae and other micro growth can be found in diesel. It depends what color your diesel fuel was if you have any thing growing in it.

The tech needs to take it down the road to see what it does with a load on the engine.

well I had the lift pump changed in Indiana. I made it through chicago with no problems. then after about 120 miles with the new lift pump it started acting up again. I have to believe the lift pump is capable of 200 miles before it goes south. I filled up again just outside of chicago. It seemed to miss a bit for about 40 miles and then it seems like it cleared up. I drove around about 80 miles with out the camper hooked up yesterday. no problems, and it seems to run real good. I am going to try a place called huckstorf diesel. They were recommended to me by one of my wifes cousins in the milwaukee area. I want to get another opinion before I hit the road back home to NY. Thank you guys for all your input, and help. I will keep you up to date when I figure this thing out.

as far as the overboosting conditing goes I cleared the code, and then haven't been able to get it over 21 psi now, I don't know if the waste gate freed up, or if it was extreme load pulling the hille in PA. I'll figure that one out on the trip home i guess.

I think you got some bad fuel, clogging the filter, causing insufficient flow at higher speeds/power requirements. I had bad fuel once and had to change the filter a few times to clear it up.

so, I made it home. Huckstorf pulled the injectors. 2 were just ok 4 were at 20% pop off and poor atomization. we put in the 275's, fixed the leaks, new supply and return lines, and installed a low pressure light kit. That should fix the problem. new lift pump last week, new injectors, no codes, injection pump must be good. The truck has great power now. The mileage is up about 25%. I got 10. 5 on the way out, and 13. 8 on the way back. pulled the hills in PA with no problems.

But the miss is still there. I finally figured it out. It must be flat spots in the APPS, causing the engine to drop out. The original problem is still there after all this work. but with new symptoms. after driving for about 2 hours with cruise control on, i get off at the exit and the idle is at 1100 rpm. shut the truck off, re-start, idles fine. Also I have a Banks exhaust brake that is not engaging. that tells me that the APPS voltage is not returning to the idle voltage. at one point I experienced a dead peddal, and a check engine light. I know how to fix the problem, I changed the APPS last year.

That is the thing that annoys me the most. The APPS is such a POS. You all know this though.

So Thank you all again for your help. It's too bad I spent so much money on a factory lift pump, I could have had a FASS installed for not much more. Next time!!
