US SAE-J2807: How GVWR and GCWR Are Determined

What is location of gooseneck hitch ball in your shortbed truck?

Have been told that truck stop truck lanes have high volume pumps with large nozzles. What is the outside diameter of these nozzles? I just got an older disel motorhome with a 90 gal tank and I'm trying to find out if my fill pipe can use the truck fuel nozzle in those lanes,(Before I get there) . I'm usually towing and getting to the disel or gas pumps at the car islands can be tough. Thanks any information.

Dont know if there is just one size truck filler or more but my 98 Dodge has accepted the big trucker nozzels. Its kinda snug but fits ok. Caution those things move alot more gpm than standard nozzles and can over fill easy. Just slow down when the tank is near full. Bill

They fit, no problem. They will vary in size upto about 1 1/4 outside diameter. Depending on how well the tank vents many times you need to set the handle lock on the lowest setting and when on that setting the diesel foam will sometimes not click the auto off function so be sure to stand by while filling the last 10 gallons or so. Also they foam the fuel a lot more due to high pressure/flow I find that in a semi I can get another 20 gallons in after shutoff and in Dodge I can get about another 5.

Yea I remeber the first time I filled up with the big rigs- diesel doesn' t make a good cologne. Had to drive from Chicago to s. e. Ohio smelling real good! I now keep extra clothes just in case I do something stupid again!

While in Arizona, you may want to avoid the big rig diesel pumps in favor of the auto/rv diesel pumps. Due to difference in taxes, the auto/rv diesel is priced at $. 09 less per gallon. If you fuel on the big rig side, many stations will not refund the difference. To qualify for the lower price, you must have a "light class" vehicle (basically, a vehicle having a declared gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds).

The nozzle should work i have 2003 and when go to TA truckstops have to fill up wth the big rigs and is snug fit but nozzleworks fine.

90+ of the time the nozzel fits. They do have a much greater volume and very like cause a spill if not careful. Quite a mess without a spare outfit.

They will allways quote public saftey

some states may allow different prices.

But what about the other reason ( when some one shows up @ non attendant credit card pump. . 1/4 mile to shop/store )

Sir this nozzel will never fit in your truck.

He arrived just as tank topped off from 1/2 full,

pump charged for 25 gal.

This happened in '92 ( 2:30 am. )running 1 of the early ctd's to Dallas.

Just west of Memphis @ airport size truck stop.

He says these pumps are reserved, for fleet accounts w/debit card or auto billing. had the fleet card but standard gal. tank!

Company accountants have no way to know how much rig needed to fill up,or used ideling over night.

So when you are upset over the current $ gal. Keep in mind this still occurs, today

if your mileage changes suddenly.

more so if you find a low price leader in future

Weights and measures only have so many people on set schedules.

These new computer (dispenser's) are relatively easy to rig.

The state tester measures certain set amounts, which can be programed to allways dispence correctly. Some Still have the over ride switch under the counter,if he shows up off schedule.

Try to find some independant truckers on cb if traveling thru unfamiliar area. ,which ones to avoid,or take exactly 10 gal x $ if you must use one of these.

Happy Trails

Been there, done that. :-laf :-laf

With the way the steps are on a Mack, you have to usually hold the nozzle to keep it from slipping out. I forgot to once, and when the pump kicked on, it shot the nozzle at my leg (was a 60/gpm pump too). Had to drive 10 hours to my destination smelling like that.

A further comment on the RV/Big truck diesel fuel price differential in AZ. I always use Flying J truck stops for fuel, normally I will use their dedicated RV fueling pumps. If the line is to long I will then go to the “big” truck side and they will adjust the fuel price down to the car/RV price if you call the fuel desk before fueling up and tell them that you are a RV.

But like the other post have stated the fuel flow is fast and at a higher pressure, so watch it for fuel “splash back”.

I can fill the pickup at full flow from the big nozzle.

Many times the problem isn't the size, but a little object placed lower in the fill neck. I took mine out and "cleaned it" to help with flow.

Get out and walk the islands before you fill. I've notice some truck stops have a smaller nozzle in many truck islands. Often you'll find them at an island where the OTR trucks have a hard time making a turn to line up, but an RV will be fine.

Policy of many area trucks stops is 100% call in to attendant before fill. I give pump #, private vehicle, cash sale, and license plate before the pump turns on. I did have one SA female attendant make a quip about not getting run over by one of the big trucks out there.

I can only set the trigger to the first notch when I use the big boy pump, it seems to be because of the smallish vent in my tank. I can actually here air rushing through it!

I can't complain though because with the high volume they deliver it only takes about a minute to fill it up . (It takes longer than that for the wife to visit the sand box ;) )

Seems like I remember a thread about a year ago that someone messed up the sending unit with a high flow nozzel. Too much pressure too fast.

Just a thought.

I have been using high flow for about 5 years now and my favorite part is getting 30 plus gallons of fuel in about a minute.

Now anytime I have to use a normal pump I cant stand the wait

Think you've done stupid things... .

I slept in te Fliin J parking lot in my truck a few years back on a trip... . woke up, realized I was runnin late, pulled up to th pump o fill up, the damn pump kept kicking off like it was full, I was getting a little t'd off at it when I finally woke up enough to realize I had the GASOLINE nozzle in my hand! Luckily it only took about . 60 cents worth. My stupidity, but they had the gas and diesel off the same pump control, and the green nozzle was gasoline... . Never fill up in your sleep!

I have found if a truck stop (18 wheeler side) has a smaller nozzle, it will be the one nearest to the attendant. Just an observation. One problem that I have with the auto/RV side, they are usually very tight for a 40' motorhome with toad.
