Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) truck not starting after changing contact on starter

just change contacts on starter, and they were worn out, connected batteries back, now the engine will not start. it is turning good when first put key on the light on panel was not normal the fuel psi was up and down. the engine is turning good.check engine light on and codes 1698/ 0216

If you've got good lift pump pressure crack a couple of fuel lines on the high pressure side and see what you get when you crank the engine. 0216 sometimes shows up when the VP is starved for fuel.

Which light on the panel are you referring to?

I believe the crank position sensor is located behind the starter. Maybe it is disconnected or damaged? bg

just went check code again, wow first tried starting engine rolling over good, not starting, plug code scanner in and cleared codes. with the scanner pluged in the truck will start. and run good, the scanner says no codes and it started a couple times with it pluged in. if you unplug scanner while engine running the engine will shutdown okay. go to restart engine with scanner not plug no start, plug scanner in and check engine light will go off an truck will start. wow any help here. fuel psi is 18 at idle.

What scanner are you using? Check codes again on your dash to see if something else comes up. Scratch my idea above, if the truck starts intermittently it's not a fuel bleed off problem. B.G. makes a good point about the crank sensor but there should be a code (p0336) showing up for that.

Okay early yesterday morning, about 7:30 am check codes none,i did clear code 1698 last night went having problems. Started truck three time with no problem yesterday.today made about 50 miles on truck and 10 startups. No problem, talked to a good mechanic in area and said maybe after finish with starter, connected batteries and tryed starting less then 10 min after batt. Were connected maybe should have give more time, he wait 30 min before staring engine up.

If I had to wait 30 minutes after every batt disconnect I would be on welfare
