My 97 2500 just had a new transmission put in along with torque converter. Truck has 138k miles on it when I start it in the morning I always let it warm up for about 10 min or so. When I pull out and head to work it always drives perfect shifts fine. When you get to a stop light and try and go sometimes it will not want to go like the brakes or stuck or something. Once u sit for a second of it not wanting to move it is like the brakes release and it will go fine and won't act up again or will do it a lot. It also sometimes will move a little but feels like something is slipping and then grabs and drives fine. The truck sometimes wants to die when it won't move and then will start moving and catch its self and drive and one time it did actually shut off. I have had the truck to 3 shops now and they all have been pretty baffled with it the shop who installed the transmission took it out and put a different transmission in and torque converter along with a valve body rebuild. Also have had brakes replaced and checked and that is not the issue does anybody have any ideas of what's going on

I don't think it is actually a brake issue that is just my best way to describe how it is sticking when moving the brakes themselves arnt actually lines and calipers pads are all fairly new

My truck done this from the time I got it new from the factory. Mine mostly does it on an incline. I read on the web sites that they call it torque converter drain back. Over the years I learned to live with it 250K and still going.

In was living with it but it has gotten so bad I miss red lights and my truck will stall out no shop around here can figure out issue

So may have just narrowed down issue truck isn't shifting back into first gear when stopping when info it manually it take off fine I have to shift it fairly quick down into first but that has worked all 3 times it has acted up today

TPS is out of adjustment, maybe? My '97 would do this and I'd turn the TPS ever so slightly and the problem would be solved. Worth a try.

Next time, pop it in neutral, wait for RPM to start to go up, take foot off the go pedal, back in gear, wait for RPM to start to drop, hit the go pedal again. That'll force it into 1st, too.

They probably don't *all* do that, but my '98 12V does it. Check governor pressures (electric on a 47RE), especially the pressure versus vehicle speed. If it's a 47RH or 47RE, check the throttle valve cable; misadjustment can do odd things. Check that the trans speed sensor is connected and works; I believe it was still used on the '97.

But stalling? The only reason a properly functioning 6B should stall is if the torque convert clutch is--or remains--engaged. Or idle is too low and RPM undershoots too far with foot-off the go pedal.

Thank you for the reply have tried the neutral thing usually works but it had gotten so bad it is just a pain in the *** to drive the truck now any little hill I stop on it just won't go unless I manually drop it to first real quick the gov pressure is next on the list for getting looked at

Mine was acting similar. Turned out to be the Governor pressure solenoid. I installed an upgraded Suncoast solenoid (GM solenoid conversion) and a new transducer, and the problem is gone. The stock solenoid is smaller, and loads up with wear particles easier. Several other companies also make the conversion, and include it in their rebuilds.
