Installed a Pier's pusher pump (Carter) today after experiencing low fuel pressures (i. e. , 0 - 9 psi) from stock fuel pump ever since adding a box. Started up truck and at idle was about 15 psi with the PP installed. Check engine light came on (never had this happened before). Took it out for a test drive and the truck ran like c%&*p (i. e. , sputtered, spat, coughed, etc. ) under regular driving conditions. Pulled off the road, unplugged fuse for PP and truck ran fine. :confused: Was thinking maybe the stock injection pump can't handle the increased fuel pressure. Anybody experienced this before on a 305 motor? Mechanic who helped on the install has done several of these before, but on the California engines with no issues at all. If the 305's can't handle the increased fuel pressure, is there a way to regulate the pressure?

Is there a way to hook the PP up backwards (wiring)??? I never was fond of the guys that say "I do this all the time"... it always seems that they get alittle over confindent and make a mistake... I would run a pressure check and make sure the PP is doing it's job...

Ran the standard DTC test and only got code '23' (headlamp circuit open). MIL continues to stay lit after test is done which suggest further diagnostics of fuel and emissions system. Service manual says I need a 'scan tool' for further diagnostics, which I don't have. :( How is it that so many of you guys can come up with these fuel and emission codes? Do most of you have this scan tool?
 
I wonder if the pusher pump is sucking in air someplace and sending that down the line into the fuel system. Since you see plenty of pressure, that's about the only thing that would affect engine operation.

Where is the pump getting it's electrical power source from? I read in TDR that the cigar lighter was the best switched power supply for a relay that has it's contacts wired to run from your + battery post through a 7 amp fuse to the pusher pump, assuming that 7 amps is high enough for the application. I also like the suggestion that you may be sucking air with the pusher pump setup. I would really be interested in what you find to solve this problem because I am leary about using teflon tape in a fuel system instead of #2 Permatex as a pipe dope because I'm about to put a blue Holly P. P. on my 03 HO. Sucking air would probably have a drip I would think, and did you use Teflon tape?
 
Power source was taken directly from the battery terminal post. Pump came with its own in-line fuse, which is what I pulled and have not yet replaced until I resolve the problem. Stock pump is currently pulling through Carter pump and seems to run fine.



No teflon tape or permatex used for any of the brass fittings. No fuel leaks so must be okay.



I will let you know if Piers has any advice.
 
Sucking air would probably have a drip I would think



if it is on the inlet side of the pump, it may not. just a stab in the dark, try runnning it with the fuel cap loose. i don't beileve that the diesels have sensors in the fuel tank like the gas engines to, but maybe the little vacuum relief valve that is suppose to be on top of the tank isn't working...
