I just had a mechanic who specializes in cummins motors in heavy equipment install my used p7100 pump. The pump came from Brad at Poncies diesel in california who was referred to me by Piers. I got a pump off a 96 wich was a 180 replacing my 160, Brad asked me if I wanted him to slide the plate in the pump for more HP which I agreed to, he said it was free of charge. Curly (my diesel) mechanic got the truck started and adjusted the idle which was still a hare high but ran excellent, he said let her warm up then take it for a spin, he left. When it was at 180 degrees I took it out. It was very responsive and quite a bit of get up and go, when I finally stomped it to the floor it popped and started smoking white really bad, it sounds as if its missing it pops and backfires and runs horribly. Before I stomped it it was no smoke only when I hit it a little bit it would puff black but after I hit it hard then all went to hell, It now idles smoking white but when you touch the pedal it starts missing and popping and smoking white really bad. If anyone can help please help me please I am stuck in the mud, the mechanic said it sounds as if its overfueled and that the 180 pump might me dumping too much fuel in which cant be fixed or did the plate being slid forward screw things up . PLEASE TELL ME THE PUMPO DOESNT HAVE TO COME OFF AGAIN IT WAS A & HOUR JOB THAT COST ME LOOT. I can call anyone if yyou can help me thanks in advance.

sounds like the timing slipped when you romped on it.

Sounds like timing to me also. With the plate slid, I hope you have a pyrometer on that thing.

Depends on how far it moved. Ya outta hear a gasser with the rotor 180* off. NASTY.

If & means 7 hours your guy added in his lunch time and several lengthy breaks.

Timing slipped, period, end of discussion. Need not remove pump but you need someone with enough intelligence to clean the taper fit properly this time. Also not to get any crud into the plunger area when removing the delivery valve to set plunger lift = timing.

Hey Guntruck would you please return my phone calls. I had the same type of symptom during a road test on a 95 after a plate install. POP!I thought the timing slipped but ended up being the lower intercooler hose blew off. Just enough air to let the afc go to full fuel but not enough to burn it. White/gray smoke. Did you find the FREE boost elbow in the box?

Hey Brad I am soooo sorry I have lost my cell phone and have been working late, due to our time difference the two times I did try calling you I got no answer. I did try emailing you or your wife but no answer sent you like 4 emails. I will call you monday. And yes I did thank you very much for the elbow. I too will get that pump out to you this week.

If or when you re-set the timing, replace the flat washer that goes between the nut and the gear with one of the new ones. Supposedly, they are formed in a wavy shape which serves as a lock washer without damaging either the nut or the gear.

The washer that is used in mine (160 pump) is flat.

I didn't know about the new one when I changed the timing on my truck so am still using the flat one.

I used about a can and a half of brake cleaning fluid to clean the shaft and gear before reassembling it and it is holding fine.

Thanks Howard I appreciate the input. I want to thank everyone that helped in this matter, I am on my way to get my truck and the mechanic will be down in a bit to check it. How long does it take to resett he timing??

It took me all day but I am S---L---O---W.

An experienced mechanic can probably do it in a couple of hours or less.

I think the specs call for 145 foot pounds of torque on the timing gear nut. I set mine to 150. Nothing broke and it is still there.

Just to let everyone know my mechanic reset the timing and the gear had slipped on the pump, the lock washer spread and he said that was why, he said thats a first after 30 years of this work. I want to thank everyone for there help, without you guys I would be very unfortunate, thanks again!!!! Oh BTW the truck is really jumpy and responsive now runs awesome I can smoke the tires like theres no tomorrow =).....

Glad to see you got it going good. The pump ran great on my truck. Did you ever get a pyro gauge on it yet?If not,get it asap! What did he time it at?Ran good at 17 degrees on my truck. Hope he at least set it at 15. 5 degrees. Have a great day!

Thanks Jim, Brad He just set the timing at whatever I think it should be. WHat he did was marked the harmonic balancer with white out then checked the gear which was off and I kept turning the balancer till he locked in pins then he tightened everything up and he was done so I dont think he set it to anything special, Im trying to find another mechanic close by that can do it for me this guy didnt seem too interested in doing it so I didnt push the issue. I wish there was a good shop close by that worked on diesels. I just cant find one.

Note to self: "... ..... Never use a Mechanic named Curly..... "

Sorry Guntruck, I couldn't resist :D Glad everything is working well now. Next will be dropping in a set of 215 injectors  Oo. .

Us early CTD owners have to stick together, our trucks are turning into collectors items  .

Providing your timing pin is dead on,the timing should be 14 degrees. That is what the timing was on my truck before bombs began! If your next mechanic wants to set the timing corretly use cpl # 1863 for proper plunger lift. Hope this helps!
