Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Truck shut-off while driving

After leaving for work this morning my truck just shut off. There was no lights or anything on the dash after it shut off. After cycling the key the truck restarted. I don't think it stalled since there were no idiot lights on the dash. The 12 volt power outlet was still working since my cooler was plugged in and still running. Never had any problems like this before.



Any ideas what caused the motor to turn off? The truck is an automatic with 60,000 miles.

It is actually time for me to change the filter but not overdue. It has been about 10000 miles since the last filter change. Planing to change it this weekend along with the oil change and other 60,000 maintenance.

Well it happened again this afternoon. The truck shut off while going over a bump on a dirt road. When it shut down there was no warning, no lights on the dash, and the radio shut off.



After talking to Toolman he suggested checking the wires to the PDC which I did and found to be tight. I also checked for codes and found nothing.



Anyone have any idea what this could be.

This may sound stupid, but just for my sake, check the battery terminals and all the wire contacts in those areas. I'm no real mechanic, but if after hitting a bump you lose all electrical power, it seems possible that the wire came undone from the terminal. It could also reconnect itself because the battery wires are stiff and usually hold their shape and would go back to make a connection after coming off. The engine would die from no fuel from the pump, and there would be no idiot lights w/o 12 volts, nor radio. Hope that helps. JOE

I have had a similar problem, only after about 2 - 3 seconds the truck starts back up (the truck was coasting in gear), but if it's the same problem your truck won't resart because of the auto. Also, mine did set off the check engine light both times. First time no code, just the light, and I'm going to try to get the computer checked tomarrow to find out about the second time. Everything I can find that could be loose was tight, and Niether corresponded to any bumps or jolts. Did it once towing up a hill and once running down the highway with the cruise on.

I have a problem with the tilt steering that I need to get to the dealer before the warranty goes. When I tilted the wheel I lost all power to the truck, altho it has not happened any other time, there has to be something loose that may pop up anytime. So the ignition/start/run circuit is important to make sure everything is connected in order to run. Not sure if this came about due to the clockspring recall but that is when it appeared.

Could be an ignition switch too, or the wiring to it.
