I decided to go with the Pit Bull tire boot instead of the Ravelco. You can drag a Ravelcoed vehicle up on a flat bed. You can't drag vehicle with a Pit Bull boot on it anywhere. It does take discipline to put the boot on every night and I don't use it at work during the day. A point of weakness I know. This thread is helping me keep the discipline. 04 Dodge Quad Cabs were the most stolen vehicle in 2006 in Phoenix where I live. Mine is especially coyote friendly because I have a camper cap on the bed.

Maybe I'll get a Ravelco too.

So lets talk security. What kinds of things can we do to protect our trucks? ANy Hi-Tech solutions like tracking systems or something of the sort?

I would guess he had no alarm... I've yet to find a person who has had a vehicle stolen with a full functioning alarm. I say just a blinking LED is enough deterent to scare them from making noise. These theives are not CSI material (not going to bypass an alarm just to steal it)... they want easy and quick. The first mod I always do on my vehicles is a Viper alarm because why do anything esle expensive just to have it stolen and stripped. Second always is a spray-in bedliner.

Then you haven't spent much time in Phoenix. When car alarms go off there, people don't even pay attention. My wife and I watched a guy disable an alarm in the mall parking lot in Chandler in about 10 seconds. Middle of the day he smashed the window out, disabled the alarm and was gone in under 20 seconds. Three years ago we had Vipers then top of the line alarm in our truck. It didn't stop that thief either. Our truck was recovered in central Mexico. And yes, our alarm was fully functional.

I live in a small ranch area town of about 1200 people, a place where many do not even lock their doors, and everyone knows each others names and where they live. I would have thought that if a car alarm were to go off people here would have turned their heads and payed attention, not so. I was in the hardware store parking lot when someone's car alarm went off. I did not see anyone around the car when I approached it so I went into the hardware to find it's owner and tell him/her the alarm was going off. I found the person rather quickly and went outside with them to check the car, the car was gone! That happened about 4 years ago. The hardware is located on the edge of town, kind of out of the way. The local Police department is just across the street and both of our local officers were in the office. I walked over with the person to the Police department to report the theft. Both the officers actually heard the alarm, and both said the same thing to us - Well we heard it BUT you know those things go off so often for no reason that we just figured it was a short or something. Anyway, it was a Viper alarm system with the motion detection module. Same as the one I have in my car. By the way, they got on the radio and about 20 minutes later a Sheriff spotted the car and it was retrieved undamaged. That guy was really lucky to get his car back. Out here in the boonies there aren't that many cars, especially the type this guy had, nice red Porsche.

I used to live in the Pittsburgh PA area. We'd go to the Big Malls at Christmas, you always heard several alarms going off, all at once, nobody paid attention to them. Just fully ignored them and walked right past them. At that time I thought to myself 'What good is putting in an alarm when no one cares to even look at the vehicle that making noise to see if somethings going on'. I felt like I had wasted my hard-earned money on an alarm system.

GTX - I'm glad to hear that you got your insurance stuff wrapped up before they found your truck, at least you won't be all tied up in some investigation because of whatever crime was committed. Makes me wonder just how long they COULD tie you up with something like that? I'm also suprised that it was not across the border and gone without a trace, that is usually what happens. So, have you found your new dream truck yet? Still waiting to hear that you got a new truck and see some pics too(maybe soon?). I was wondering around my dealership today and saw some nice new trucks being unloaded, fresh from Mexico. Your situation crossed my mind as I was thinking about how many of these new ones that just got here would be stolen and return to their homeland. I know that may sound a little strange but that is just what crossed my mind at the moment. Too bad my thoughts NOW have to go there, it was a lot nicer living without crime and hearing stories about it.

They found it in AZ because it probably went to Mexico then came back across the border illegally carring illegals or drugs. The border patrol ran em down out in the desert (its been thrashed on out in the desert in the middle of the night) probably why its not drivable. Now it sits in an impound yard waiting to be bid on at auction for parts. Happens all the time. Glad you got your check first before they found it :)

Why don't you look at buying the salvage back from the Insurance company? If they total it... it is still your vehicle to buy, at least that is how it works here in Oklahoma.

Jeff Bradley is right, No alarm on the truck. I live outside of Denver so I did not think it needed one. I normally disabled it from starting, but did not get to it before it was stolen. I think we are going to wait a while before getting another truck. Don't need one for a few months.

There was a triple murder in NW Tucson thursday morning. There were 15 or so illegals in a dodge pickup stolen in Phoenix. 4 bandits opened fire on them and killed 3. The only picture I can find with that story looks to be a black pickup. Mine was patriot blue. This is according to the Tucson paper web site. I don't know if my truck was involved in something like that but who knows. I have the tucson detectives number but have not called him yet.

I lived there for three years, 10 years ago... and I go back and things have definitely changed. I guess most people disregard an alarm because they usually aren't the ones that have one. When an alarm goes off people who have one are the ones who should question if it's there's. The key fob alert is a handy feature to alert you away from your vehicle if your's is going off.

stolen truck too!!

two months later they tried again at my house but something spooked them because they didnt take it. they r going after trucks with bed caps. ive taken my bed cap off scince then.

I would think that with a new truck and the fuel pump in the tank, the easiest method would be to put a switch in the fuel pump circuit..... something that's hidden and not easily seen..... flip the switch and it might start and go 20 ft but without fuel pressure it won't go far... .

Just my thoughts..... I also might put a flashing LED on the dash but thats a lot of work... .

I bought a 2007 Black SWB QC 4X4 2500 Auto SLT Big Horn edition. Really enjoy the short bed, no driveline vibration, more power and better fuel mileage.

Hey GTX.

Been watching for your post . . CONGRATS on the new truck!!! From your sig it looks like you have had it for a couple months, also see you are enjoying it, glad to see you are up-n-running again.

Congrats... . it feels better when you get the stolen one replaced... . i got my 06 1 month after the 05 was stolen... . and got a few upgrades i skipped the first time around..... enjoy the truck and get it some protection... .

Yep, had it a couple of months. Has 9100 miles on it. Bought it with 120. So it has not stopped moving for long. Need to get it outfitted now. Been making sure it won't start every night and most every time I get out of.

Did anyone see the Dateline TV show the other night. It was about a sting opperation for car thiefs. I was not counting but it seemed like almost 50% of the stolen vehicles brought in to sell were Dodge trucks. One of the car thiefs brought in a Dodge truck and wanted more money than the undercover cops would give him and the cop says they have too many Dodge trucks already.

The company I work for got a very well taken of 04 3500 DRW stolen in Tijuana Mexico while helping at an orphanage project. It was loaded with a couple thousand dollars worth of tools and few of the passengers had a couple hundred dollars cash in there plus miscellaneous personal belongings. They told the local police but they couldnt find it (I dont know if they tried). The army has checkpoints set up on all the major roads going out of Tijuana so they told them also but they didnt hear anything for a about a week. Then they got a letter saying it was in a government compound and they had arrested the guy. When they got the truck the batteries were missing and everything else that was on there. It also had a couple dents but at least they got the truck. Apparently they used a hammer and and punch and broke the door latch. Then they broke the ignition and took off. Hope you get your truck back.

theft proof your rig now

All I'm gonna say is take the necessary precautions. Set up your truck so it can't be started from anywhere in the cab while you are gone. That subject is a big can of worms around here so I'm not gonna touch that one, whatever method you use doesn't matter, just do it.
