Truck stop etiquette?

Just a little side thought. Here's another reason to be glade you have a Dodge/Cummings: Those big truck nozzles will fill your tank fast but don't fit the Fords!

I've always used the truck pumps, but I've never called or gone in first. I usually move the truck before I pay if there aren't a few lanes open.

Most big truck stops I've been to don't turn the pump on until you talk to them on the squalk box.

I also use the big rigs side when fueling. The place I stop at home requires you to call in before you can fuel. Most of the time I try and go in when it's not busy. By the time I get out of the truck and put the gloves on they're on the box saying "you're all set to pump". If it's busy, I will pull ahead just enough for the truck behind me to get to the pumps. I'll also tell them when I start filling, so they won't call the authorities. If it's slow I'll leave it parked and go in to pay.



I try and stop at the Flying J's when I can. Then I'll use the RV pump, because I don't always have a trailer. I wish they'd have better signs at some of the places. If you're not familar with the station you can go to the wrong fueling island. At one place I stopped everyone from fueling for a couple of minutes while I backed myself and the trailer out and turned around to come in from another direction. As I was fueling I saw someone come out and put up a temporary sign that indicated the correct lane to enter from the street.

As yall might have figured out by now, taxes and protocol varies by STATE--just like most little laws involving taxes and taxable behavior--when, where how you can buy alcohol for example.



In Tennessee, I take the truck pumps whenever possible. No problems, no price differences, no phone/radio necessary.



Also in Tennessee, Sunday beer sales vary by location, NO wine in beer stores, and no wine/distilled spirits on Sunday anywhere--except wine AT the winery.

It depends

I don't mind using the "auto diesel" pumps if I can see that I will be able to pull in and pull out, and that my rig won't block too many pumps or access to the station. If it is crowded and looks like I may get blocked then I go around to the truck pumps. When using the truck pumps I fuel, pay, and get out of the way. I'll park on the lot and then go back to potty, buy snacks, walk the dogs etc. Courtesy always.

I belong to Flying J's RV club. I have a credit-type card that turns on the pump. Truck or car island works the same. Quick, no running in or talking on the phone. I get the cash price when using my credit card and they give me an extra cent per gallon discount.
