yesterday everything was fine... started down the road this morning and the truck wont shift past first gear (4sp auto trans) I drove it a while before it FINALLY shifted up to higher gears. Come to a stop, then the same thing again after acceleration. So it needs to run in first gear too long before it finally shifts up. Fluid level if good and clean. The only thing that DID change was the rainy weather today. Maybe moisture is shorting-out some electrical component? Is it safe to drive it like this so I can get it to a shop?

Thanks Missouri Mule. Tried that first thing this morning. Started out with shifter in first, let the rpm's build up, then manually shift up to second, then D. I could not hear or feel the gears change, BUT after going through that sequence, now in "Drive" the trans FINALLY shifted up from low gear to high gear automatically like it should. Come to a stop-then go: same thing again, stays stuck in first... . but this time I tried pumping the throttle a couple times and it seemed to coax it to shift at a reasonable RPM. Where to look first: TV cable, linkage, valve body, torque converter, filter change? Something electrical?
Thanks again.

It is probably the pressure sensor or solinoid. They are fairly cheap but you will need to pull pan and VB. to change them out.

I'm actually thinking more of the speed sensor than the selenoid and transducer. Any problems with those two almost always involved not having 1st and sometimes 2nd gear. Just a thought.

Replaced the speed sensor today as that was the easiest thing to do first... did not fix the problem. I'm wondering if I should take it to the dealer or transmission shop and have them check it out
or just go ahead and replace the governor pressure solenoid, and filter and adjust bands while I'm under there? Can they scan for trouble codes from the OBD, or do they need to pull the pan anyway to check the components?

I would try adjusting the front band my service manual states that this band is applied in 1,2,3 and 4. The rear band is applied in 1 and reverse only.

The front band is mentioned in the trouble shooting sections:Shifts delayed or erratic, Stuck in low gear( of course there are other possible causes for each condition).

I would check for codes, if there are P codes just they should display on the odom with 3 cycles of the keyswitch. I had a problem just like that with the wifes '00, I replaced a couple components before I checked codes, and a speed sensor was out of spec.

FIXED! what a great site and thanks everyone for your knowledge.
codes from odometer said P0753 and P1725; replaced those parts: TRANS RELAY AND SHIFT SOLENOID.
and it is up and driving again. Thanks again! Robert
