Our 99 dodge 3500 will not start. Have just installed new lift pump and new injector pump. The system has been bled to the injector fittings will fuel at each. I can start the engine with a shot of ether, but it will not pick up and run on its on. I also installed a new cam sensor while the pump was off. I would appreciate any suggesttions of what to do next.

Jacobe,

It would be helpful to use a code scanner to check for any diagnostic trouble codes. This might help narrow things down. A simple code scanner can be purchased for under $100 from your favorite auto parts store or Wal-Mart. All you need is one that displays and clears the trouble codes... not one that gives a description of the code. You can find the descriptions for free on the Internet.

Start with the basics:

Does the lift pump run continuously when you pump the starter but don't start the engine? It should run for ~25 seconds.

Assuming the lift pump runs properly, do you have adequate fuel pressure at the VP44 fuel injection pump inlet? With the lift pump running, ideally you should have about 15 psi, but anything above 5psi should allow the engine to start. An inexpensive fuel pressure test set can be purchased on eBay for around $20-40.

Are you getting a good *strong* shot of fuel at each injector fitting when loosened cranking the starter? Weeping a little fuel won't cut it.

Please keep us posted and good luck.

I did check the codes and found none. Pa had un-hooked the batteries already
You'll want to check for trouble codes immediately after trying to start the engine (with freshly charged batteries). If there's a problem with the new cam sensor, it may show up with a trouble code being set.
