My dad is out camping and his truck will not start. He had a check engine light come on and stay on for quiet a while. While he was camping, one of his buddies told him if he takes the terminals off the batteries, the check engine light may reset. He did so and now (after replacing the terminals on the battery) the check engine light is flashing and the truck will turn over, but will not start. Also there is a relay clicking under the hood while trying to start. Any ideas? His truck is an '06 with the 5. 9L engine.

Update: He tried it again and it fired. I know that there is a way to get the code off the odometer output. Is there a way to get rid of the check engine light? I would like to see if he does indeed have a problem or if it is a ghost problem. Thanks.

it will take 5 good runs with no faults in the system to clear the check engine light. I don't think the key trick works on 06's but try this any way.

Turn the key

ON

OFF

OFF

OFF

If it works the codes will come up in the odometer. When the codes are done "done" will be displayed.

A friend at work had the same problem with his 06. I called a family member at the local dealership and she got me in touch with the diesel tech. He said that when the engine light flashes you should not drive it at all or you could cause pemranent damage (just what the tech told me for what its worth) it ended up being a bad injection module if I remember correctly.
