Archived Help!! Can't Get It In Gear

Heavy mods =big problems. '97 12v 135k. Had a Pdr cam, and valvsprings installed. At the same time added a 4k gov springs, 370 injectors and a 16cm turbo housing. All were installed by me and the gov springs and inj pump timing was set by a local shop that seems to understand hot rodding a diesel. My problem is 0 I mean zero power @ idle. I can hold the brake (hydroboost) and kill the engine, and it will not idle hot. The idle fluctuates up and down from 1100 to 500 and back again. The pump timing has been set any where from 13 deg to 12 to 16. 5. It is now at 16. 5 and runs great once you get the truck moving. ANY HELP? ALL of this started with a KDP!! woe is me
 
Did you remember to remove the plastic timing pin (injection pump) and flip it over in the cap after installing the pump (before torq. the injection pump gear nut). If not may have sheared the pump timing pin and have pieces of it stuck in a gov. spring pack (big idle springs). .



Another guess is that pieces that should have been removed from the gov. spring pack were left in the pump with the addition of the new parts. . which will also cause your symtoms. .



You might have governor issues as well. . if not the above.



Do you have a digital camera? Get a close up of the parts that came out of the pump for me. . If to large to post, try me directly -- email address removed --.



Finally, your throttle linkage could be binding or the idle could be too high. Set between 750 mark and 1000 on the tach, better yet, a scanner is best as it will read off the speed sensor. .

Governor springs are misadjusted. That's why you should measure them when you take out the originals. The other possibility is that the governor assembly may have been damaged somehow. Either way, you need to crack back into the governor housing and take a look.
