My brother has a 98' model, 24 valve, 4x4, 5-speed. He just bought it about a month ago. The guy he bought it off of had just had a new clutch installed a Dodge dealership. A week after getting it, he would have an occasional problem getting it into gear. The second week it became more frequent and he had to force it into any gear. . So he called the guy and he said bring it back in and they would check it out. So he took it back and they kept it for 3 days... driving it all this time ... . and they said he was crazy... it shifted fine .

So my brother went and got it and drove it for 2 weeks... NO problems... . then one day he's driving and it won't go in gear at ALL. So he parks it, hour later gets back in it, and it drives and shifts fine. This goes on for 2 or 3 days.

Finally it just won't shift at all one day. It shifts fine with the truck off. You can put it in gear, push down the clutch and start the truck and it sits there. Release the clutch and it takes off like normal. But you can not get it back out of gear. And sometimes out of the blue you can start it and take right off like Nothing is wrong. Drive for an hour..... NO problems..... shut it off... then start it back up again and it won't shift. First thing I thought was M\S cylinder , so we bought both new at NAPA and replaced them. but still does the SAME thing... ! Could the new ones be bad? I dunno what to do. . and he can't afford to pay a shop to work on it. I"m Stumped..... Please help

Proper oil and amount in trans?

Does the engage/release height of the clutch pedal seem normal? Consistent?

All I got at the moment, but I'm sure others will think of more...

Those symptoms sound similar to when a clutch installer didn't attach the throw-out bearing to the lever correctly in mine. The bearing was sorta jammed between the nose of the transmission and the lever. When the transmission was removed we found the input shaft housing had a big groove in it, the lever and bearing were ruined, and the pilot bearing was GONE! I'd take it back to the dealership again.

The trans fluid is full and the pedal seems to release the same and constant. I'm going to pick up a new M/S clyinder at the dealer tomorrow and put it on Sunday. Just to make sure its not the problem. If it doesn't work, I'll drop the transmission and take a look, because I really have NO clue whats wrong. NOT looking forward to that.

Dropped the transmission few hours ago. FOUND the problem. Three pieces of metal broke out of the clutch, where the metal surrounds the springs. They had fallen down into the pressure plate and was not letting it release all the when you pushed the pedal down. The dealership said they would not replace the clutch because it was out of warranty. :{ There is ONLY 200 miles on the clutch. WHAT a load of... ... ... .....

:) Ordered a S\B clutch monday. Dealership would not replace the clutch. My brother said if this does not fix the Dodge, he's going to get another S-10. Which is what he traded in for this truck. :--) I told him not to get too crazy.

You might want to check the pilot bearing, transmission input shaft for cracks/bends and the transmission input bearing. I had a cracked input shaft on my '99, which caused the clutch and pilot bearing to disintegrate. I replaced the clutch and pilot bearing, only to find out about the cracked input shaft when it sheared completely a year later, leaving me on the side of the road. Of course, both breakdowns happened over 500 miles from home (and the comfort of my own shop). :{ Mike
