went to start truck after work. the key turns but the starter won't.

replaced the starter, nothing, still won't turn

almost like a neutral safety switch, as i feel there is no power to the starter.

the main feed to the starter is live.

any suggestions

check the fuse under the hood. It should be a 20amp. same thing happen to me. If you can't find it just jump the solenoid to get it home. .

also note, there were no codes

all other electrical components work,lights,radio,etcc

is there a shift lever position lockout safety?

Not sure where on that yr. but there is a nutral safty sw. either on the bottom of the steering colum or at trans .
It could also be the ing. sw.
Use a test light to look for the loss of the start signal from the ing. sw. [ & everything inbetween ] to starter ,

I don't know what else to suggest. I have a '95 so I don't know the circuits involved on your truck. You need a wireing diagram and a meter before you start swaping parts.

This probably won't help much since my truck is older but I know mine has a shift position switch that will keep it from starting. The switch is on the driver's side of the transmission between half way up and the top. I suspect you also have a switch but really couldn't say where it would be at.

The switch is the same place because the '97 and '00 both have a 47RE. My '95 has a 47RH so I don't know for sure how the switch works. You might try cleaning the connector. It should be a round three wire connector behind the shift lever. Check to see if your backup lights come on when the shift lever is in R. I think the backup lights are on the same switch. If they don't work you may have a bad switch or a bad connector. I just guessing that it may be the same as mine in that area. What I don't know is how the circuits are on a 24 valve truck.

i jumped the starter to get the truck running.

i'll get it home then evaluate that switch. i hope this is it

thanks for your help

i will post what the final results are

Yooper1 thanks for your help.

the problem is solved!!!!

here is my understanding of the fix

the starter contacts were bad,(there was no advance warning on this for my truck)

this in turn blew a 20 amp fuse in the fuse box (engine compartment)

i replaced the starter, but did not know about the fuse, therefore the truck still did not start.

once i replaced the fuse, the truck did start.

i really appreciate all the help on this

thanks for the help

problem solved!!!!!

this is a summary of how i understand the sequence of events

starter contasct were toast

this in turn blew a 20 amp fuse in the engine compartment fuse box

i replaced the starter and forgot to replace the fuse so it still would not start

once i replaced the fuse as you suggested, it started fine

thanks for the help
