Has anyone thought about crossing a true in-head Jake to our 5. 9's? If a set could be found off of a small diesel that had the valve lift close to ours, couldn't a little machining be done to make it fit? It would probably reqiure custom valve covers(12valve). Any ideas?

It would be cool. I had an exhaust brake on before the HX40 came along. The sucking sound of an exhaust brake through stacks... ... well, sucks.

The real Jakes require injector pushrods to operate them, which we don't have. It's the injector pushrod coming up that cracks the exhaust vavles at the top of the compression stroke. Craig

I was under the impression that several of the 5. 9 isb in a school bus application had true jakes. I always thought the reason for not fitting in the Dodge was hood clearence. By the time you bolt the Jake's on top of the engine you would have to raise the hood about 6 inches.

I don't care how but I wish someone would make it possible for us to have jakes. Stopping my load is my biggest problem.

This might be good news here, A friend of mine that lives around here put a 6BT in a 1960's Chevy stakebody, says that he thinks that he can built one. He has taken the head off and measured clearances, but this set-up would not be for the weak, there is only a tiny bit of clearance for this to work.

Anyway, if he comes-up with anything I'll post it here, the other problem he was having was finding some soleniods that would work!

It kinda sounds like what I had in mind. It would be a "make it fit" situation but I think it could be done with the electric in head types.

A couple of years ago I had a mechanic at Cummins in Denver tell me Jacobs was working on a true Jake for the ISB. Apparently Jacobs decided it wasn't worth it, or couldn't do it. If they did build one I'm pretty sure it would be in the $2,500-3,000 range. I know they're pretty expensive for the big rigs.

I have an 8. 3 ISC 330hp in my motorhome with an Allison HD3060 6 speed auto. It too has just an exhaust brake, as well as a retarder in the transmission. It will slow the 40,000 lb coach down pretty well. But I am wondering why they don't put a Jake on it like they do if the 8. 3 is in a big rig. I wonder if it is just because of the sound. People don't want loud motorhomes.

EMDDIESEL,
He is not sure, he said that is the route he would like to go though.

Sound, yeah, that sure would be an issue. I put a straight pipe in and out of my truck now and then, and I just cannot imagine the sound of a lil' B with a jake... whew #ad
Some places have out-lawed jakes, just shows where the priority is here... safe driving naaah, quiet roads are much better #ad

Just made a trip thru Texas Panhandle on Hwy 87, and just about every little burg there had a sign posted coming into town (right where the speed limit dropped from 65 to 45)
that said "NO JAKE BRAKES".

Asked a local cop at a convenience store about it, and he said the fine was $75 on up.

So it seems we are lucky to have the exhaust brakes that can be used anywhere.

I live RIGHT off a very steep exit ramp on I-95 in Connecticut and some of those rigs with Jake Brakes will wake the dead when they come down the hill. I love the sound but it scares the hell out of you when you hear at 3 am and you are asleep. Sure wish i could put one in my ISB.
