You guys will get a kick out of this. I finally started in earnest to buy a new 3500 4x4. Because of the potential steering problem I would like to find one on a lot that fits my needs so I can drive it, versus order one and when it gets in, the steering is screwed up and then I have to deal with that problem. Well there was a good looking red with auto and sport package at a local dealer that I had been eye balling. It had been on the dealers lot for 3 months. Now I know that any of these can be bought at dealer cost so the wild card is what will they give me for my trade. Dealers like to use Kelly Blue book. If you ever notice I think Kelly Blue book must be owned by a group of Dealers. I use the one on the internet where you can indicate your exact mileage so you get a better reading. Retail on my vehicle shows as $23,800 Trade in value is $16,800 and my vehicle is in top shape. So I go in to the dealer and figure I will deal on invoice for their 3500 and $16800 for my trade. They don't hardly look at my trade, they don't even drive it just check the mileage and then make some calls to wholesalers. At that point I knew I was in trouble, and I was. After 30 minutes with them trying to see if I understood "numbers" they were willing to sell me the 3500 at invoice but only give me $14,000 for my vehicle??? That is after they already told me that they got a bid from a wholesaler at $15,000 site unseen. I then explained to them that I could take a 2 1/2 hour drive to Milton Okla. and buy for under invoice and that Milton Dodge advertised using the Kelly blue book on their web site to determine what you could expect them to pay for your trade. Which is how I came up with the $16,800 figure. They just looked at me like a Deer that was caught in the headlights of a big Dodge Cummins that was about to run over it. Their answer to the extra $2,800 that they wanted me to pay was that "we need to make a PROFIT". I just smiled at the guy and took my keys and said "I bet that it's hard to make a profit when you aren't selling anything". I am sorry for all of the bandwidth but I just love to screw with car dealers. The result of this is that I will be heading to Milton Sales in Okla. :) How do these other dealers stay in business??? Considering where I live is only 2 1/2 hours from Milton Sales.

New car dealers are a pain in the you know what, however you can not fault a business for wanting to make a legitement profit.

Dennis:

Try selling your vehicle to a private party. Very rarely do you get a good deal on a trade in for the reasons others pointed out. Profit!!!

Just my two cents worth. Good Luck.

Go Dennis, Go!

The way they stay in business is there are a lot of unfortunate souls out there who haven't done their homework and don't know how to play the game. Many people think $1,000. off the sticker is a deal, not knowing the sticker is marked up around $5,000.

Walter: The key word is "legitimate". I'd say $2800. is above legitimate. I like the Edmunds definition of fair profit: 3% over invoice.

I also agree that it's usually tough to come out ahead on a trade-in.

Dennis: Don't even deal with a salesperson. Go right to the top dog of the dealership and let him know that you are going to buy the truck somewhere. It's just a matter of who wants to sell it to you at YOUR price. They'll make a profit from the holdback even if they sell it to you at invoice. There's plenty of dealerships.

Happy wheeling and dealing! #ad

I tried to buy my truck in Las Vegas "what a joke" these dealers are crooks. I ended up in Ada Oklahoma and saved over 3 Grand. I paid for the flight down with the savings in closing cost {almost $600 in Vegas $69 at Chaprell Dodge. Bill Rudd was the salesman. He is a nice guy and honest.

Dennis,
I know what ya mean. I have bought a lot of cars and the dealers here in Texas go by the black (wholesalers) book. If memory servers me correct it is put out weekly and based on what the auctions are doing. The Kelly book is pretty close. When I bought my truck I checked Kelly and NADA. I also checked all of the papers and saw what my truck was selling for. I was going to sell mine in the paper and just happened to go to the dealer to talk to a salesman that I knew, and told him what I wanted to do and asked him what I should ask for the truck. He came back and said that they would offer me 500. less than what I was asking for it if I would leave it with them now and order a new Dodge. They sold me my truck at 300. over invoice less 500. farm rebate. I was going to buy from Milton so I had invoice and going this route saved me 1100. in taxes as they also showed my old truck as a trade in. I felt I came out alright. The thing here to remember is that most dealers will add 3000. to whatever they offer you as their asking price for the vehicle. Sorry for the ramble, but I like you will move on if I don't like what they want to offer and will not give them a second chance so they better offer the best the first time.

The Dealer/owner/saleman will make profit no matter what they sell vehicle for or give for trade in. actually with trade in they get to make more profit on you.

I think you will be very happy with Melton in Claremore Oklahoma. A friend of mine plans on buying a truck from there. You will like them when you pull up, a pretty small dealer with the whole place PACKED with Turbo deisels. YOu might also try Mike Quin Dodge in Tulsa. My dad has bought several vehicls there and always had great service.
