Tsb 18-004-04 Does NOT Work On 2003{ UPDATE}

The service bulletin say it does but it don"t . Talk to cummins guy at DC. Said would look into it and get back to me, did the flash ,even tried the 04. Has any one had it work on their 03,I known it works on 04.

I had this feature enabled on my '04 today and although it may not help you '03 owners I have a little story to share. My dealer tried this flash for me last week and supposedly had a problem with their computer so they told me to stop in another day and they would retry. Today when I stopped in to pick up my SRT-10 A-pillar I asked the service adviser if they had the time to do the re-flash today. They had time so they pulled my truck in and performed the re-flash. About a 1/2 hour later they say "Mr Rosco" your all set. Well I'm all giddy as I jump in my truck and try out my new "high idle" feature, which of course does not work. After reading some post's from other guy's here I knew exactly what the problem was, they did not enable the feature with the DRB 111 handheld. I got the shop foreman and explained what I thought was wrong and sure enough he needed to enable the feature. What make's me laugh though is I gave them a printout of the whole procedure step by step from Chrysler's Tech Connect, they just chose not to read it.

So if you have '04 truck and would like this feature to actually work MAKE SURE THEY ENABLE IT AFTER THE RE-FLASH.

I'll second Rosco's recommendation. When they give your truck back, try it right then an there, preferably right in front of them. If it doesn't work, get them to enable the feature.

Yes, it looks like the feature only works on the 04's. Someone posted in another thread that the 03's have a Cummins ECM & a DC PCM, while the 04's have a different Cummins ECM and no PCM. If that's true, that I'd guess the '04 software that gives us the idle feature won't even load on an '03.

A few days ago, an '04. 5 guy tried to work the feature on his truck -- no go. He was going to have his dealer check to see if the feature is there and just needs to be enabled.

It would be great if it worked on all 3rd Gens, but I don't think that's gonna happen. :(

The cummins guy from DC claim it should work on 03s, and my complain was the first he heard of a problem, Talk to cummins they also said engine can be program to do this,My company has electronic hoists and higher RPMs lift the equipment much faster. I want this feature to work, every diesel should have this feature and most medium and heavy equipment does, at lease optional.

Fronm reading the tsb several times it looks like it says 98. 5 through 04. 5 D. C. needs to be involved in a reply I think. I want this feature for the 6 speeds. All they need to do is trip off the speed sensor etc. to cancel it if truck shows movement.

That will be good news for lots people if they can make it happen!

The TSB CLEARLY states right at the very begining that this TSB applies to 2004 model year trucks, that's it.

The later instructions detail how to get into the right diagnostics area to enable it, but these instructions are used over and over I'm sure for various model years and why they show how to get there for various model years. That's my take.

If it can be enabled on 2003s then I'm all for it!

It seemed from reading it it says 1998. 5 through 2004. I've never seen a tsb that mentioned other year models it didn't apply to. D. C. needs to respond.

Becauase like I stated, it's most likely just a kind of "cut and paste" section that they re-use to cover all verbage on accessing that section of the diagnostics.

The question you need to ask is, if it applied to any years other than 2004, why would the ONE section that states explicitly what years this TSB effects only list 2004?

Seems like I've seen TSB that state one model year, but apply to previous years. Also note that #2 of the proceedure is using an older TSB if the ECM part number does not match. I'm not saying that it will work, but this TSB is laced with references to prior model years and with the dealers having problems doing the 04's, an '03 or earlier may be too much for them. And by gosh, I just want this to work on my truck.

If I look at the bulletin, I see a special "NOTE" that states if your truck has an engine # of X OR EARLIER AND a born on date of X OR BEFORE 12-10-03. That says to me that some 03. 5 could be included. One would have to check their SN. AND DOB.

Cummins guy today said {won"t mention name at this point} the problem exist with the cold weather feature that DC program in the ISB engine ,This program has to be disable ,and the high idle software loaded and turn on in early model engines and than should work.

DP, I did not ask him ,I will tomorrow, today I drove a ISL motor with a automatic that had the high idle feature. I am going to do more research. I still think it will work.

Ok, we have a lot of theories flying around, but I haven't seen a single 2003 owner claim to gave it done and working. Someone should be able to if it's possible.

No one has put as much effort in as me. I have had to over come similar obstacle's { speed limiter, auto shutdown, configuration}and I will get over this one,Cummins is the Creator of this motor and knowns what it can do and not do, it is very difficult to fine a qualified tech to help and not get DC involved.

Made appointment Monday to have High idle program turn ON, all ISB motors have three options,HIGH IDLE,PTO, AND RAMP,I will be loading the ramp program, it is similar to the dodge 04 program. Cummins has turn this program on in thousand of buses and motor homes and light trucks. Cummins guy said no problem getting into configuration of motor and loading any software they have, mention it is a simple installation. GOOD NEWS FOR ALL YOU 6ER"S IT WILL WORK FOR YOU TO .
