I live in Washington state, have a 2011 3500 H/O 6.7L Diesel, Auto, 4:10 gears and tow a 12.5 K 5th wheel. In December 2013 I had a Check Engine Light (CEL)and took the truck to the dealer in the town I live in. They said the connectors for the o2 sensors needed to be rebuilt which they did. 2 days and approx. 400 miles later on a trip to Arizona the CEL came on again. I stopped in Medford, Oregon to have the code read and they said it was okay to drive (o2 sensors again). Got to AZ and then took the truck to a dealer in Blythe, CA where I was told the connectors were rebuilt incorrectly when done before I left home.
The dealer in Blythe re-did the work, but then I discovered I had a lack of power when solo on acceleration and a lack of power when towing especially going up-hill.
When I got back home to Washington, I took the truck to the dealer I purchased from and explained my issue. I even had the 5th wheel hooked up so they could drive it and experience what I was talking about. They looked at the rebuilt connectors and said they looked not so good, but of course no CEL so no problem, but I knew there was. They also stated if there were anymore CELs they would replace the entire harness.
Fast forward to June when I was on another trip and having to tow over the Siskiyou's through Ashland, OR.....it was painful, I actually had semis passing me and it was all I could do to make 42-43 mph up that grade where I could easily tow at 60-62 previously. I called Lithia Dodge in Medford and they agreed to look at the truck. They had it for a day and drove and drove it, but again could not find anything wrong, but when I was on the phone with the service advisor the tech came in and said the entire wiring harness needed to be replaced because it had been so boogered up and they didn't want to try and rebuild the connectors again for fear of creating an even worse problem. The work order read "REPLACED TRANS WIRING HARNESS THEN REINSTALLED SOFTWARE PER TSB 18/12/12". After dealing with a lack of power while towing for nearly 7 months, the truck ran as it did before and I was a happy camper.
Earlier this month I was on a trip to CA and towing when I had another CEL. Took it to a local dealer and they said I had another o2 code (P2196), but before they could go any further they were required to rebuild the o2 connectors on the new harness. Being very reluctant because of my past experience, I contacted my dealer at home and they and the dealer in CA both agreed it would be okay to drive until I returned home and have the work done at my dealer in WA.
When I left CA on my first day of towing the truck ran fine and strong (with the exception of the CEL). On the second day of towing I experienced the same loss of power as before. I can only assume that because of towing the heavy load with the CEL on it caused the engine or transmission to detune even though there has never been any codes indicating this.
Because of my experience with the dealer in Oregon who re-installed the transmission software, I have to believe this is the fix. I have searched and searched, but cannot find TSB 18/12/12. Can anyone shed any light on what the TSB entails?
